Porta potty at the ceremony

Dawn, on December 20, 2019 at 11:00 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 23
So my mother in law to be is freaking out that our ceremonies closest bathroom is a 10 min walk through the pasture. We are getting married in my families pasture and i don't really want to pay almost $200 for an ugly porta potty to be closer. Our ceremony and photos might be an hour max then we will all be going to the town hall. Is this something i really should worry about or is this just another way for her to push her way. (Shes also made comment to my mom on my fake flowers cash bar and told her if we divorced it would be amicable) help!

My mother-in-law is not the easiest either, I can relate. If it was a ten minute walk at the reception, that’s an issue, but you’re fine. Just ensure somehow that everyone knows where it is. And then put up a big ol’ invisible shield around yourself and smile and nod when she tries to get to you. Just smile and nod Smiley winking

Thx Amanda! My future MIL is generally a nightmare on a good day, i don't really care on her thoughts it just pisses me off that we are under six months out, im recovering from a mild brain injury(which makes everything harder to handle) that shes aware of and now shes bringing this up although everything else had been booked since jan. My fiancé on top of this agrees with her on this and i really dont see the point of it.

Oh boy, well that's not too supportive!
My suggestion would be to leave it the way it is, firstly no one should be going to the bathroom during your ceremony... Secondly if someone has to go to the bathroom that bad, just make sure your guests are aware ahead of time and it shouldn't be a problem.

Don't listen to the fake flower talk, fake flowers are beautiful. I have to use them at my wedding as my Fiance tends to get stuffy when hes around flowers.

Your Mother-in-law needs to understand if she isn't paying for the wedding than she needs to shut her yap a little more, she can make suggestions politely but that's the extent of that.

Most guests don’t stick around for pictures. It will be fine. If you have a wedding website, let people know on there the washrooms are a 10 minute walk. If not, on the sign state it so people can plan ahead. Most people know their bodies and can hold it for a little bit.

I think you will be fine without it in that case. Only if you were also having the reception there would I recommend it.

It is only our ceremony and photos we will be there for. The rest will be held at the town hall 10 min away from the farm. We will have a bathroom sign in the yard. Right now i have one child at 5 and no one over 70 that is unable to do the walk if it is essential. Our wedding will be 60 guests or less right now we have 24 confirmed.

I was at an outdoor wedding this past Summer and they rented a super fancy trailer porta-potty. It was huge and super clean and nice, it had lights and mirrors and a working sink inside. I've also seen really nice standard ones too. These are unfortunately very expensive and while nice I don't believe they are essential to the day, although 10mins is a bit of a far walk if there are any kids or elderly in attendance. I think in the end it comes down to what you want, remember you will also have to make the same walk in your dress. Are you also having the reception at the pasture or just the ceremony? If it's just the ceremony I think you will be fine, if you are also hosting the reception there a rental may be a good idea.

She has told us at the beginning of our engagement they wouldn't help pay for the wedding. So i dont see her footing the bill for this and i dont really think this is essential to our day.

Let them walk. Just let guest know on arrival that the bathroom is situated further away. A port a potty is unpleasant to use esp at a classy event such as a wedding.

I see what your MIL is saying and for what purpose which I don't agree with at the same time. I wouldn't want to use a porta potty having a nice suit on or dress for ladies to feel uncomfortable.

She feels this is her dilemma, she can offer to step up and pay for it as the guests that really don't mind using it, will go the shorter distance. Your sticking to your guns as the ceremony is a short time and everyone may not have to worry about washrooms. This is her choice and way of saying it bothers her mostly.

If given the choice between a porta potty and a ten minute walk I'll take the walk every time. I cannot imagine the state I would need to be in to use a porta potty while dressed up for a wedding.

I do see Meghan's point about older guests and small kids, so maybe post on your wedding website or have a sign near the parking so those who might need to go can do so before the ceremony!

Ya, I wouldn't worry about it at all then - some weddings are hours long and people have to sit there and wait for it to end so what's the difference of a long ceremony vs. a short one with some walking distance right?

Thank you! Its for sure worth asking. Most people will be parking in the yard site or pasture so im not sure if a golf cart will work. No one is pregnant that i know of or over 70 and maybe only 3 or 4 kids in total most are over 5 or in diapers.

I did just a bit of googling and these are the two sites that I have found that may be able to suppy a nicer looking one?

    1. www.rockbox.ca (however - I did find it through Kijiji but the website says their head office is our of Alberta so I'm not 100% sure if they also operate out of SK)

    2. www.myportapotty.net

Hopefully you find what you need - but imo I think that as long as it isn't too long of a ceremony overal that it would be fine to not have any porta potty's.... Like my ceremony lasted at most 15 minutes and it wasn't a problem... If the porta potty's don't work out then maybe you guys could rent a golf cart or something for not only the wedding party so you don't have to walk all the way there - but to aslo pick up and drop off the more elderly and pregnant people? For my DH's cousin's wedding last year they had one for that reason since the ceremony was about the same length away from the hotel.

I was thinking maybe something like this. White with indoor plumbing. No idea how expensive this would be.

My mom did for sure shut her down on the comments its just frustrating. From the companies ive seen its just the generic blue porta potties available. Nothing too nice to look at. Thank you for your help!

My opinion is that it sounds like you need to bring in bathroom facilities. A 10 minute walk to a bathroom would be problematic for many children, elderly, pregnant women, those with poor mobility, etc. You are bound to have at least a few guests who would be challenged by that arrangement.

There are some nicer facilities you can have brought in that would be more elegant than the usual porta potty.
I would ignore the comments MIL is making to your mother. Is your mom able to shut her down?
