Plus size wedding dresses?

Colleen, on April 7, 2020 at 23:41 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 15

Hi everyone!

So I am a girl who loves her body, but knows that finding clothes can sometimes be a challenge (because I not only had to be short but also have curves lol). I'm 5'1, 36H, and typically anywhere from a 12-16 depending on the brand. Does anyone out there have any advice for going dress shopping? I'm slightly concerned that I won't be able to fit into any of the sample sizes (as I've heard some horror stories)...

I'd love some sage wisdom from some of you beautiful people who also share this beautiful "problem"!

I'm close in size to you. I ended up ordering a size 16 Stella York dress. I had a few bad bridal store appointments with bigger store names, and I eventually found that the smaller boutique stores with great google reviews had lots for me to try on. In general though, the sample sizes to try were bigger than I originally thought.

I know how you feel. I'm 5'6,42H,and more then a bit curvy. I despised trying dresses on. I felt so crappy because I didnt look like everyone else. I ended up buying from amazon. I found in the reviews of a bigger woman wearing the exact dress I wanted and it looked beautiful on her. That picture felt like a sign that this was my dress because I was obviously so nervous about ordering online and how it would look on my frame but the only image review at the time so happened to be a woman my size and shape! Dont be afraid to explore your options and stand up for yourself. You can be just as stunning as that anorexic supermodel.

Hey! I had a hard time dress shopping because I'm about the same size as you but 5'6. Some stylists will be able to clip and pin the small dresses at the back so you can kind of get an idea of what it will look like. I purchased my dress from the 4th dress shop I went to and they were the only ones that carried plus sizes as well as 'regular' sizes. Knowing what I know now, I would call ahead to the salons you're considering shopping at and ask if they have any plus size samples to try on and I would only book at the salons that do. It's really hard to imagine what a small dress on our body would look like in the proper size. Since most salons say they can order the dresses in any size etc, I personally found it wasn't worth the time and emotional energy trying on too small sample sizes. Also, I ended up getting the Annie by Truvelle - it's stunning and they're dresses fit curves beautifully. Best wishes and happy shopping!

I’m around the same size depending on brands and didn’t have a hard time at all. I just did a lot of googling before booking appointments and both stores (local boutiques around Vancouver) I visited had tons of dresses that I could try on. They likely won’t have your perfect size but they pin them together so you get an idea of what they’ll look like.

If google fails give the stores you’re looking at a call beforehand and they’ll be able to tell you whether they carry any plus lines.

    Best of luck!

I also got mine at Davids. I was very pleased with the selection. As a plus sized women/bride I was very anxious about buying a dress. I wanted to make sure it was what I wanted but I wanted to feel beautiful in my body and about myself. Believe me when I say I found a few I love and they one I picked made my knees weak! I think about it everyday...I can't wait to wear it! Its beautiful. I would say look online at Davids and find some you like. They are amazing there!

Azazie has really nice dresses and you can ship them to your house and try them on.

    Hey!

I totally feel you girl .. i'm 5'0 and typically wear between a 10-14 depending on the brand as well. When I got my dress, they sized me at size 22 dress and I was just in shock.; Dress sizes are crazy small.

I was very concerned about not fitting into the dresses because i'm a heavier person and it completely screws with how you look and feel .. you could have found the perfect dress but because it's super small, you don't feel great.

Thankfully, the places I went to try on dress were around the size 18 area so they were just slightly off - this included David's Bridal, Kleinfelds and Pearl Bridal House (Pearl is where I found my dress). A lot of the dresses at these places are made bigger to ensure they fit everyone who tries them on .. I did need a few of the clips on some dress which made me feel better because they were a bit too big and it definitely gave me more confidence that day!

Best of luck with wedding planning Smiley smile

Hi! I am a plus size bride in Ontario. I called/emailed around to bridal salons in the area I was willing to travel and spoke with them about their plus size sample availability. A wedding dress is a big purchase, so you deserve to go to a salon that offers plus size dress samples that way you actually get to try on dresses that fit. I wear a street size 16/18, and ordered by dress in a size 24. I ended up buying by dress from One Love One Dream Bridal in courtice and had the most amazing day. I tried on 12 different dresses, all in plus size samples that fit my body and I am so glad I did that homework.

Best of luck, it’s such an exciting part of wedding planning!!

I found a store here in Winnipeg MB that caters to plus size - not sure if you would want to make a trip, but they were great Smiley smile Or maybe there are some stores out there that are like this? The store I went to was The Perfect Gown

I myself am also a size 12-16 and a 36-J and I was able to try on most of their dresses (there was at least one that I couldn't get past my hips... damn wide hips!! If you can't make the trip or find a store like this near you - I found that it was helpful to try and laugh it off like "wow, plus size store and my hips and boobs are still too big to get it on!!"

David's Bridal carry plus sized gowns in store for you to try on. That's where I got mine from (I'm between a 12-14 for reference).

I definitely found bridal sizes to be a little smaller which is something I've always heard so I wound up trying on a size up from what I thought was my size. Let me tell you how good getting clipped into a dress feels as a plus size woman, it really boosted my confidence after the first dress I tried on didn't fit and I wanted to quit shopping right then and there.
