Place cards and seating chart

Melissa, on April 9, 2022 at 16:10 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 4

We are trying to figure out where to put our place cards. We would like to do a seating chart so people know what table to go to. My fiancé wants to put place cards on a main table and people would pick them up. I am thinking of putting the on the guest tables. Our venue requires them so the wait staff know who is getting what meal option.

My fiancé thinks people won't like who we put them beside, and we should let them pick their own seats at the table. And my concern is people not actually put them on the table and just putting them in their pocket during cocktail hour and forgetting about them. Our venue suggests just putting them on the tables.

So I am really torn on what to do.

A cpy of a written seat chart provided for the waitstaff is easier as you place the name cards on the tables itself won't be anymore confusing. A colour gem or sticker system to allow the waitstaff to see who gets whats meal as they come around the table.

I can't imagine any adult being placed at a table near someone they actually don't want to sit next to?? Plus they'll already be at that table regardless and one would assume you would be placing people as best as you can. Also even with the name at their seat, they can switch within the table - no one will stop them. We had escort cards as well as the name at the seat as I wanted to put acrylic cards on the charger plates. We had our MCs announce during cocktail hour to ensure they put their escorts cards in front of their plates as their meal choice sticker was on it. Just have someone announce to guests to make sure the cards are visible to wait staff, regardless of what you choose to do.

I personally would put the name cards at their spot. If it makes it easier for the staff. No one really cares who they sit with for dinner. It doesn't last that long and after you'll find everyone at any seat. If you have a seating chart and place cards some people may not even notice the place cards. We have place cards that will be at the front but we will not have a seating chart as well. Our venue doesn't require the names of guests because we are having family style not plated.
