SO... I'm REALLY torn right now.
We're having a very low key wedding (tops 30 ppl, just a house party as a reception). So since it was so low key I figured I could save on photography (no point in hiring someone for the whole day if there's only going to be so many pics to take).
I was lucky, I found a great photographer who would do a half day (4 hours) for $500 (with the option of paying extra hours if needed) and that was that.
But now I seem to have found (or scrounged) enough money together to hire her for the full day and I DO want getting ready pics etc.
So... I'm torn... I know everyone on here is going to say "omg yes you need more photography time". But all I hear are ppl I know who've gotten married who say "you're going to find 1 pic you like and the rest is going in an album that you'll look at once a decade."
It's only 500$, I know... But this wedding was originally going to be 2000 total and its tripled in size... And 500 could go towards a nice patio set that we can all use after dinner (and will be around a lot longer than a photographer...)
Wow... That was rambled... Which shows just how torn I am.

Thank you so much, guys! You've talked sense into me. Absolutely I can get ppl to snap pics when I'm getting ready etc. I might just pay an extra hour or two on the tail end because I desperately want a sunset picture

    Hi Amanda,

I'm not too sure what your timeline is for the day but would it be possible, instead of a full day to add just a couple more hours? Maybe an hour earlier and an hour later? You could get a few getting ready photos and a few more of the party.

This way you could use some of the extra money you've saved but not the whole enchilada.

I agree with Becky, if there is ANYONE in your family, or a friend, who can take those extra "getting ready" photos, try and do that. Otherwise, think about it like this, were you super disappointed not getting those photos before you had the money to do so? Or had you already come to terms with focusing on the wedding itself?

It's easy to feel the need to spend the money when you have it, but easy to convince yourself you didn't need it if you don't. Something for your home, or even a getaway vacation, will probably mean much more to you than professional photos of getting your make-up done.

Also with cell phones nowadays, the cameras are better than any of the digital cameras we used as kids... so you can encourage people around you getting ready to snap lots of pics, get them to try and be a bit artsy. Most likely you'll get a couple great shots that you can include with your photos, and you won't break the bank.

I completely understand where your coming from. Maybe think of it this way- are you type of person to hang different photos afterwards or type to only choose one and leave rest in an album. Do you know anyone else that has a camera who is a friend that could take for free? I had someone like that offer to do the hours that I couldn't afford to pay extra for. It did really help and I gave her a list of shots I would like! I understand wanting to buy other items specially if you have your place together. I thought no way will I spend this much on a wedding when I could renovate a room in my house! or build a fence in the backyard. I had to pick and choose and make a dream list. But after making the list narrow down and say yes I would love that photographer but ideally I cant spend that.
