Photographer Contract

Stephanie, on April 27, 2019 at 12:01 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 9

Just wondering what everyone's contract was like with their photographer.

Ours has asked that basically everyone stay out of her way, she is the photographer we are paying for and we don't want other people in our shots or their flashes going off ruining her pictures etc. I totally agree with this, getting family to follow the rule will be another problem all together.

She has also asked that we acknowledge her and her work in any pictures posted to social media. I do not have a problem with this either.

The point I take issue with is we are not allowed to share any personally edited pictures.

'The client agrees that they will under no circumstances alter the photographer’s photographs that are placed in public or on the internet. As a photographer, I need photographs to be an accurate representation of my work so that future clients have a good understanding of my brand and style. The client agrees to be responsible for any family member or friend who posts our photographs online and agrees that they cannot be cropped (with the exception of forced cropping on social media), altered in color, or edited in any way.'

Is this normal or common?

Ours also says something along these lines BUT my photographer said that if I want her to take a couple shots on my phone I can edit those ones and just differentiate those shots from hers which was awesome! I also don't think I will need to edit any of her photos more than she already will so it's not too bothersome.

A lot of them will also edit a photo how you want it done (if they are ok with the final product) and allow you to share it after.

Ours is the same. From the comments below it seems pretty standard. It makes sense because photographers take pride in their amazing work and there should be no need to alter what they have done anyway. I understand the worry of family posting things. Our contract doesn't mention being responsible for other posting and even if it did I wouldn't be worried because I'm sure this wouldn't be an issue where the photographer hunts you down or anything. But you should definitely just trust your photographer to do what you hired her to do, you shouldn't have any reason to edit the photos.

Yup! that sounds right. The girl we are working with wanted to be mentioned or tagged in the photos, and she asked to please not alter anything however she cannot control our guests if they use anything she posts

That sounds very normal and common. I believe that my photographers contract was similar.

This is an interesting point. Our photographer didn't have such clause in his contract. The pictures could be put on social media which my brother did on Instagram. No permission was given or anything said in that aspect.

I had a few people mention this or places we cannot print them as it will change the colors or be poor quality. Honestly though, if I don't like the picture she has provided and want to edit it, I am going to.

That seems like a standard clause for a photographer to have - their edits represent their artwork and they want to protect their art. I would trust your photographer's edits to best represent your day, you are paying so much money for it too.

I can't remember what my contract said but I completely understand where she is coming from. I have a family member that is a photographer and she explained it to me. She basically said this is there art and they carefully edit each photo to best represent both the clients and themselves. You should trust in your photographer to deliver what you want. I do understand being worried as you cannot control family and friends.

I believe that is a standard clause in most professional photographers’ contracts. Now that the majority of photos are given to couples in digital format, it’s too easy to alter a photo in way that it no longer is the style and substance of the artistic work of the photographer. If people then ask who took the photo, it doesn’t represent their actual work.

I get that that it’s difficult to control others editing and posting, but a quick explanation to them should help them understand.

If anyone (yourselves included) wanted to make adjustments and print for personal purposes, you absolutely can.
