No dancing! Now what?

Joanna, on November 10, 2021 at 19:30 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 15
My husband and I tied the knot this past
May with our parents in a small ceremony. We connected the rest of our guests through zoom. We postponed our reception until December in hopes of having a “normal” event. Well brides, todays announcement popped that.

The only way we can have dancing at our reception now is if roughly 30 guests leave (which we have an idea for). But my question is, what did you do without dancing for 4 hours?
We have a few game ideas but other than that, no clue. I’d love to hear your ideas! I’m currently super grumpy about it…

Dancing can still happen once you have the amount of guests remaining after dinner or after a game of bride/groom shoe game of who's habits or ways game to see how many they get right knowing you both well.

Another idea is taping tiaras and crowns under one chair of each table to have guests feel as kings and queens for every table and share it if they want. Spin the wheel can also help you keep guests entertained to tell stories/jokes/share a moment they had with one or both.

    Hi Joanna,

Thank you for the well wishes and I wish you luck with figuring out the best solution for you! For me I was thinking of doing the trivia and/or other games after dinner. (To fill time between the end of dinner and the cake cutting. I think after the cake cutting some people will naturally leave and hopefully at that point around 10 pm dancing will be allowed.) If you have a projector available at your venue you can create the questions on programs like Kahoot, project them and guests can use their phones to answer. During dinner we are allowed to have music playing, there will be speeches and people are eating so I don’t think dancing will be an issue during that time. Plus we are allowed to have our first dance, and father daughter dances etc during that time too. So personally I’m more concerned what will happen after dinner to make it to 10ish when some people will leave on their own. I guess hiring some sort of entertainment too is also an option like the comedian another person suggested. In the end I’m sure the day will turn out for both of us, but it’s just frustrating with the constant changes.

Ugh, I know! It's frustrating that restrictions apply to certain industries...

Anyway, that you for commenting and giving some ideas - the trivia would be fun to play during dinner. Good luck with your planning and wishing you all of the best! If I have any bright ideas, I'll let you know as well Smiley smile

When you've been thinking of this day for a decade, its disappointing to have to compromise so much. We will likely have games but not sure which ones.

I'm glad to hear your wedding went exactly as planned. Smiley smile

    Hello Joanna,
That is so weird, I thought that was changed.
We got married October 16th and we were able to dance!! The venue capacity was 70 and we had about 58-60 that we were allowed.
I wish for you that they reevaluate it for you to incorporate dancing. Maybe at some part play games (show game or the card ones). Really wishing you all the best.

On November 15th the capacity limits for wedding receptions (among others) was supposed to be lifted. Now, receptions remain at 50% capacity and if you want dancing, 25%.
They will reevaluate in 28 days (Dec. 8).

We didn't have dancing at our wedding and it was fine. People were more than happy to chat with one another after not seeing each other in so long. Our event ended well before 1am but that was fine with us. 4 hours go by pretty quickly when you have speeches and games.

I personally would take advantage of using the time to take proper photos and making some memories out of them.

    Hi Joanna,

I am in the same situation. My husband and I had our ceremony only Nov 28 with a few guests last year. We thought a year later we would be able to have a fairly unrestricted wedding reception/anniversary celebration. Sadly with the government’s constant changes it’s been super hard to plan anything! Also I don’t understand how it’s OK to have 20 000 fans elbow to elbow in a sports arena, while dancing at a wedding venue which has separate dancing and seating areas and way less people is problematic. Why not instead limit the amount of people allowed on the dance floor at a particular time since there are the two areas? I personally plan to write my MPP and Mr Ford. Anyways sorry for the rant and I too feel your frustration! Our venue said our cake cutting will be at 10pm so I think some people will leave right after that so hopefully that will be enough to allow for dancing. (There really wasn’t going to be any guest dancing before 10pm anyways) I was thinking of creating a trivia game about the couple, guests can also play, and maybe renting other games. I’ll let you know if I find anything else.
