My photographer gave me the wrong quote!!

Sadia, on February 6, 2020 at 12:00 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 19
How would you guys handle this situation?
I had been in contact with a photo and video vendor for a few weeks now and they gave me a price quote of $2200 for my reception. I said it was great, provided them with all the necessary information and I was waiting for them to email over the contract for me to sign and send the deposit with.
Then they went MIA for two weeks. Turns out they were in India for another wedding project.
Today, they come back to me saying that while they were putting together their contract, they realized they had given me the incorrect pricing. They now say that the services will cost $3800. 3800!!!! That’s NOT a small increase. I don’t know HOW that mistake was even made but I am definitely not prepared to dish out an extra 1600. I’m frustrated because I was expecting to book them and I wasted like, four weeks trying to rope them in. My wedding is creeping up and I’m about to cry because all the other photographers I messaged previously are all booked.
What would you guys do? Is it fair for me to ask them to honor the price they first gave me? I wouldn’t even mind going up to $2500 but that’s my max. SOS!!!

I would look for someone else, in my opinion. The fact that they waited 4 weeks to respond to you and then quoted you incorrectly but a large sum shows a lack of organization to me. What they need to understand is that you are investing in their work and if they cant be organized and pay attention to email with something like a contract or a quote, I would be questioning what their attention to detail would be for your images, etc.

Exactly that’s my worry too, I feel like the better thing to do would be to move on from this. Let me know if your friend has an social media handle I can find him at!

I'd definitely be worried about them not putting their best work forward after this if you try to have them agree to the original price. But it's worth a try nonetheless if you're comfortable with potentially working with them still.

Either way, I'd still be looking around a bit just so that if worst comes to worst you're not totally behind on trying to book another vendor. I do have this one friend that is an amazing photographer/videographer that's based in Toronto, I'm just not sure on his package pricing or what his schedule is looking like this wedding season. But his name is Andrew Ahmed and he's an amazing person and really easy to work with, I would've hired him for my own July wedding but FH and I wanted him there as a guest as opposed to a vendor.

In one email I sent out I did include a lot of ... and the word "devastated"? That's about as much as I was able to do over email without going full "I'M IN TEARS AND DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!! Smiley cry "

Good point! Luckily ALL our correspondence was through email so they know we have proof of their words! We wrote them back expressing our concern but at the same time I’m still going to look around. Smiley sad

Ahh thanks, my fiancé replied with a strongly worded email but now I’m worried that even if they agree they might not put in their best work... oh well. Time to start the search back up

I would ask them to honor it. Do you have emails or texts with the original quote?
If you need to you can counter with your max offer, but I would wait and see if they honor the original price.
If you do have proof and they are being difficult I would (subtlety) mention that you have proof they promised you one price and that it could damage their reputation if that were to become public.

Man, that is one MAJOR goof up Smiley angry

I would go to them and I mean, it doesn't hurt to ask them if they would be willing to work with the original quote - worst they can do is say no right?

If they say no, maybe they can meet you in the middle or something given the circumstances? Make sure to lay it on thick about the fact that they went MIA and you've been messaging around and everybody is now booked and you are worried you won't be able to get anybody now. Fake crying works for me..... but that's best over the phone...

Otherwise now is the time to go to a FB wedding group page and put out a feeler and see if any photographers message back on there?

Aww I’m so sorry to hear this Smiley sad I would ask if they would honour it ... if they don’t then just advise that you will be leaving a review due to the lack of communication as well S being wrongly quoted... it sucks since you were ready to sign with them so I’d definitely mention that on the reviews

I wouldn't go with that vendor in particular since their quote was off majorly. The contract itself hasn't been signed and they didn't do it before they left so it can't be honoured by any means. Check out others to fit your budget.

Awww thank you for the recommendations! I’ll definitely check them out, I’m terribly picky since we are having a large south Asian wedding and I need someone who’s got a good portfolio of them. So many of the good ones I know are gone Smiley sad

    HI!!

I would not book with them. there are plenty of other Photographers who may still be available in your area at a much more reasonable price.

I see you are in Ontario, is that correct?

here are a list of photographers that are in your price range (less than $3000 for sure!) - i know most of them can go to Ontario since they are based in Montreal. SO fingers crossed for you!

    - Honeytree Studios

    - Alessandra Jennifer Ross (you can find her on instagram)

    - Julia Garcia Prat

    - Ever_after_photgraphers (that is their instagram handle)

Good luck!! you still have plenty of time so dont worry!
