Moissanite Platinum Engagement Ring Questions

Jon, on June 20, 2019 at 01:03 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 3

I am planning to purchase a moissanite platinum engagement ring. I have found the exact setting I want from an online store (James Allen) but they unfortunately do not deal with moissanite gems. The setting is a very simple four prong petite pave flush fit with a 6.5mm colourless moissanite (https://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/14k-white-gold-petite-pave-engagement-ring-flush-fit-item-56252). I am planning to reach out to other online distributers and jewellers to see if they can replicate the ring for me. I have several questions about engagement rings and the general process:

1) Is there a difference between getting moissanites vs diamonds along the shoulder?

2) Should I provide any additional information other then the link to the James Allen ring when asking the jeweler to replicate the ring?

3) Should I ask for a sketch or CAD drawing before payment?

4) Do I need to worry about different quality of platinum?

5) I read about Forever One moissanites and Heart & Arrow moissanites. From my research, they are the highest cut of moissanites. The difference is that Forever One is sparkles more then the Heart & Arrow, and Heart & Arrow is more 'dull' like a diamond. Is my understanding correct?

6)

Are there other categories of moissanites I should pay attention to when purchasing the center gem? I was thinking of a colourless moissanite. Do I need to worry about the other 4 C's?

    Thank you for your input and advice.

    I am most likely going to go with MoissaniteCo.com. I am looking for a simple platinum pave ring with 6.5mm moissanite, and these guys seem to do it for the cheapest and having a wonderful online review.

    @Amelia - that is a beautiful ring!

    @Jennifer - did your jeweler tell you how to identify what is a fake Forever One moissanite?

    My Fiance and I were on Stuller.com. It's a wholesale website that offers customizable rings and I found the perfect one, you cannot order from the website itself but they give you links to all the jewelery stores near you that purchase their products. I found the perfect jeweler in Surrey, they will make it from scratch if needed and we were going to go with Charles and Colvard forever one for a temporary moissanite, but this place will order it for us and they have pretty much taken care of everything.

    They warned us to be careful when buying moissanite online as the cut will not be as brilliant, our jeweler said she had seen some cuts that were cut in China and were flawed then sold claiming to be forever one or by Charles and Colvard. You can provide your sketches to James Allan but a big jeweler like that may charge you a lot more for the customization, we were going to go with People's jewelers at first and glad we changed our mind.

    For the forever one moissanite there's usually only two grades of colour, colourless and near colourless. You can go to a website called fireandbrilliance and they will tell you the difference between the cuts and if you need to worry about the other 4C's. My FH knows more about this than me but hope some of the information helps. If you have any other questions about my comment let me know. Well done on all your research!

    Wow - you've done waaaay more moissanite research than I did! I would assume the link to the James Allen ring would be sufficient but you could call your jeweller in advance and confirm what they would need. I'd ask for at least a sketch from them - and the CAD drawing if they can swing it - just so you know without a doubt you're on the same page and you can maybe tweak any details you're not sold on. I also have a platinum band since I do a lot of work outside and didn't want it to warp, which it hasn't. It does scratch more easily than other materials but I'm happy with the trade-off and you can barely see the scratches anyway. My stone is a Forever One colourless and the sparkle is UNREAL - can't tell you much about the Heart & Arrow. I would still know what you want when it comes to the other C's even though they're replicating the specs of an existing ring - just in case there is any confusion. Here's a photo of mine, should you find it useful. Good luck!
