moh Roles and Responsibilities

Hi WeddingWire!
I'm asking my cousin to be my MOH but she currently lives in New Brunswick and just recently decided not to move back to Ontario, as she had planned. I think this arrangement is going to make it very difficult for her to do certain things. For instance, I started my search for a wedding dress this weekend and I asked my BFF to come with me, who I've asked to be a bridesmaid. However, I think this situation is going to continue where my MOH can't assist and I'd be asking my BFF to step in. I intended to ask my MOH to liase with my BFF as her point of contact for assistance in Ontario. I really didn't want two MOH but I also realize it's very unfair to ask my BFF to take on so much more work than any of the other bridesmaids and basically fill in the gaps of the role of MOH. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!(including telling me to suck it up and have two MOHs!)

Im also a New Brunswicker, and I know travel outside the Atlantic provinces is difficult and a little scary right now. Our province is enforcing a 14 day isolation for travel outside the bubble, even for some essential workers. If your MOH can't work from home this makes any trips a huge expense due to loss of work, and if she can't isolate away from a spouse/partner then they also potentially lose 2 weeks of work. There's still a lot of stigma for those who do travel, people are scared and our province has reacted poorly to "outsiders" lately. So I would not count on any travel other than the wedding from her.

If the bridesmaid is ok with doing the work and helping out, then you could just refer to them both as bridesmaids and let the more formal title be set aside. I only had bridesmaids because I couldn't pick one to have a ceremonial special title. They all helped any time I asked. You can encourage them to liase so that they both feel involved and supported, and at times you may be the liason. If you're comfortable with it I would also mention to your MOH that you feel it would be more fair to refer to both ladies as bridesmaids because you love them both and because the BM is doing a lot of extra.

MOH is usually your right hand person who does make all pre events arrangements along with the bridesmaids for your celebration. Anything you need advice or suggestions, they can help if you seem uncertain.

If your cousin can make it to Ontario for the wedding itself and be present for a bachelorette party wherever it is, I say that more than qualifies her to be the MOH. Traditionally, the MOH plans the bachelorette with the bridesmaids and be your right hand on the day of the wedding.

Unless you expect your MOH to be a wedding planner or attend appointments and meetings with you (which you should have relayed when asking her to be the MOH so she knows what she's signing up for), this shouldn't be a problem. You certainly do not need to consult your MOH on your dress choice and she can easily provide input on bridesmaids dresses virtually.
