Mixed gender wedding parties - how’d you style them?

Christine, on April 17, 2023 at 13:46 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 8
Hi all,

Want to get some ideas on how you styled your mixed gender wedding party or any ideas you’ve seen! I am planning on having 3 bridesmaids and 2 bridesmen, and my fiancé will have 2 groomsman, and 2 groomsmaids.
We’re planning on having dark navy blue suits and having bridesmaids dresses be like a rust/burnt orange/terra cotta colour. I’ve seen some photos of how some people have done it with just having all groom’s side one colour and all brides side another. Problem is, there aren’t many options for rust/burnt orange/terra cotta suits. We don’t want the bridesmen to have to spend a fortune to get suits specially made.
So have you done it another way? Different bouquets? Different ties? Just making it simple by having all girls in one colour and all boys in another? Any photos will be incredibly helpful as well.
Thanks!

Yes these are great ideas! I think we will do something along those lines. It’s just so much easier to not have to try to match colours of suits and dresses. Thanks for your help!

Gotcha! This is kind of the idea I had all along but wasn’t sure if it was “enough”. I’m glad other people are thinking the same way, thanks Smiley smile

A lot of people do the traditional super matching thing on each side but since you're already breaking from tradition with mixed gender bridal parties, why follow such customs?

You can have all the men (groomsmen and bridesmen) wear the same suit if navy is a wedding colour but also differentiate them by having the groomsmen wear a long tie and the bridesmen wear a bow tie in the rust/orange colour of the bridesmaid dresses. While my samples of a rustic sports coat/blazer could look nice, the benefits of a navy suit are that they are easier to find and much more rewearable for the men for other future events.

For the groomswomen, you can just have them wear the same dress as the bridesmaid instead of navy (so that it's not just all blue up at the altar) but add a small accessory of navy to them, like a sash-type belt or a blue corsage, to differentiate them.

Yes exactly. All boys in black suits and white shirts, with accents of the bridesmaid dress colours (pocket squares on my side, boutonnieres on his)

So it sounds like your brothers on your side are also wearing black suits as well but with pocket squares matching the bridesmaids dresses right? So sounds like you’re also saying the same thing as Hank in this discussion - women one colour, men another, but with something small to differentiate.

Thanks for your response! Okay I had just seen many photos with the bride’s side all trying to be one colour and all grooms side trying to be another colour. Wasn’t sure if just having all men wear one colour, all women wear another was weird or not. We are planning on having boutonnières with the orange on the men, so that will tie it all together. It is certainly the easier option to just have one colour for each. Had also seen played with the idea of men on my side wearing navy suits but with an orange tie or something to differentiate. Hopefully that wouldn’t look weird!

Hi! I am having 4 bridesmaids and my 3 brother standing up there. My groom is in all black, his groomsmen are in black suits with white shirts and all the boys on that side are wearing boutonnières with my wedding colours (dust rose and burnt orange). My brothers will have pocket squares made from the leftover clippings from altering my bridesmaids dresses so they will look nice standing next to my girls.

No pictures yet as this happens in September but I am thinking and hoping it will look nice!

Are the groomsmen wearing any rust/orange elements on their suits? Like a tie, boutonniere, pocket square etc? If so, just have all the men wear the same thing. Or if you have a secondary colour other than rust/orange (not sure if navy is a wedding colour or just your choice of suit) you can have groomsmen wear that as accessories while the bridesmen wear the rust/orange.

If you really want the bridesmen to look more unified with the rust/orange, you can give the option for autumn-coloured sports coat or blazer. That would look really nice for an autumn winery wedding. A blazer would cost less than a full suit and they can just wear a pair of dress pants they already own. With blazers and sports coats, you get more variety in colours. Examples below (ignore the dress style - they can be formalized with the right accessories). I personally wouldn't worry too much about being 100% match between the bridesmen and bridesmaids. As long as they look cohesive, it'll work.
