Married Outside My Province

GCMcGEE, on March 31, 2020 at 16:20 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 10

Does anyone know about the legal process of getting married outside your province of residence? I'm in Ottawa, but one venue we are considering is in the Gatineau area, would I need a marriage licence from Ontario or Quebec in this case? I've been looking on the government of Ontario Website and they have a broken link for this information...

You would go with Quebec. Where ever the ceremony is held is where you get the license.

It is different prices, in fact Ontario itself says that the price varies by municipality! Still it only seems to vary by a few dollars anyways...

Its per province you would have to go to a quebece service centre and get the documentation for there.

You need to go on the City of Gatuneau website to look up marriage licenses.

Damn... they need to get their website together... Especially because that now makes me think that it might cost different amounts on where you go.. Here in MB it's the same price for the license no matter where you get it and you can get one through the court, a jewellery store, or your officiant... maybe look into an officiant out there that would be wedding you and see if they can help you through the process?

I would think the area surrounding your wedding would be required. The government site will indicate whats the legal document to get if Ontario province will be rejected.

Looking at the Quebec website now and it's a disaster lol! They don't even list the actual fees and every requirement in a separate link, it's so confusing you have to keep going back a page and keeping track of what you've read... WOW!

I would assume you just have to follow the provincial guidelines for Quebec if you are to get married there. Not sure what they would be (never even been to Quebec, probably never will), but I'm sure they have a government site or something with more information maybe? I know for MB does Smiley smile Might be as simple as getting a license in that province and an officiant that is licenses for that province as well.
