Good to know, I was told I had to wait for the passport.

I just requested my marriage certificate (I was married in Ontario), and they said it takes between 10 and 12 weeks for it to be registered, so definitely up to a three month waiting period as you said.

I think it can take about 3 months for the records to be updated with the licence in order to request the Marriage Certificate (long form or short form). Once you have that Certificate, you can update your last name by bringing it with you as proof of marriage.

You don't need to update your passport either, even if you update other documents such as your driver's licence. You'll just need to hold on to the paperwork showing the name change as proof its you on the passport.

You'll need your marriage license for the ceremony, which you can get up to 90 days before your wedding day. Afterwards, your officiant will submit the paperwork, and you'll need to request a marriage certificate. I believe you need to wait a few weeks, so that the officiant can submit it and the government has time to process it. Afterwards, you are able to get the certificate and start the name change process. Just keep in mind that if you plan to go on a honeymoon soon after the wedding, you'll need your passport to say whichever last name is on your airline ticket, otherwise it causes heaps of problems!

I believe you need the last name change first. And you cannot get your marriage certificate until after the wedding. You'll need to show your marriage license as proof of marriage.
