Lost a side stone - need advice on fixing my ring!

Doulia, on November 10, 2019 at 16:15 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 13

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some advice on my ring. I got engaged in March 2019 and my fiancé and I designed the ring together. We were thrilled with the result and I loved my ring with the custom petal prongs and pear accents so much... until one of the accent side stones fell out!

I am quite distraught as we were hoping for a ring that would last a long time and need minimal maintenance (perhaps naive of us). I am going to the jeweller tomorrow to see what can be done to fix it and check all the other prongs and stones. But we are also thinking of maybe modifying our setting to make the side stones more secure. Right now we just have three prongs on the pears.

Has anyone had similar issues with fancy-shaped stones/side stones falling out? Is there a secure setting that I could change to or a way to modify my existing setting to make it more secure? You can see that one of the prongs got bent quite badly.

I really love my ring and would prefer to only do minimal changes but I never want to risk losing a stone again.

I lost a stone from my ring and it broke my heart mine was reset and rebuilt with thicker prongs. I know its hard to think of redoing this ring but do it with your fh and it can be the next chapter of your ring! Since having mine rebuilt i get it cleaned every two weeks they check the prongs as my settings like your are delicate. But id rebuild it to make it stronger so it lasts the test of timeLost a side stone - need advice on fixing my ring! 5

Thank you. We just ended up having someone local rebuild the setting as the company who made my ring went out of business.

The two jewellers I went to said that as well. It's just such a small setting that it will be hard to build onto it. Might have to have it re-made.

Unfortunately we bought the ring overseas from a small business and it would be hundreds of dollars of customs to have it sent back there. Also the trust is a bit broken since two local jewellers have now told me that the setting is poorly designed and that this is likely to happen again..

Thanks! No unfortunately not. I looked down and the stone was gone! I am meeting with the jeweller again next week and will ask for a 6 prong setting for the side pears I think.. Just hard to think of re-making the setting for the ring. My FH and I designed it together and I was really attached to it.

Gorgeous ring! I'm in a similar situation where I don't have a jeweller to go to (we bought the ring overseas). I had to shop around a bit.

Thank you! I went to two different jewellers and they both agree that while they can repair the prong and set a new stones, the setting is putting us at high risk for this happening again. Unfortunately it seems that the initial setting is too delicate for the size of the stones and it will be hard to build more solid prongs on the existing setting. They both recommended that if we want "peace of mind" we should have the setting re-made with a similar design but stronger prongs (or more prongs on each side pear).

Your ring is gorgeous! I'm so sorry this happened, Doulia.

How did the consultation go with the jeweler? What did he/she recommend doing?

Our jeweller went out of business so I didn't know where to have my ring looked at. While getting another piece of jewelry looked at for warranty I asked if they could look at my ring. They did and the side stones were loose. I ended up taking the ring to a local jeweler to have the setting rebuilt as I didn't want to lose a stone. I can only imagine how you feel. It would be horrible.

Oh no!!! this is horrible to hear. did you find the jewel itself? ask the jeweler when you go maybe a 6 or 8 prrong would keep it safe from falling out again

I'm so sorry to hear that - most jewellers have a warranty though if you do lose a stone so maybe there is one on your ring? What did they say when you went in?

It's beautiful, I'm sorry to hear that you lost a stone.

Did you buy a protection package from the jeweler? I know that if one of my stones falls out they will reset it (I think I need to have the stone, otherwise I think insurance replaces it).
I'm sure the jeweler will have advice to make the setting more secure, after all they want their work to look great and last as much as you do. They might just need to change the length or thickness of the prongs to make them stronger.
