Ladies only please ☺️ Dress Shopping when you're not a standard size

Abbie, on June 10, 2021 at 22:11 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 27
Hi all! I’m starting to get quite anxious about dress shopping and was curious to hear others’ opinions on the approach. I’m very busty, but only 5ft 2 and I’m terrified of looking ALL bust. Or, if I don’t look all bust in person, it coming out that way in pictures. Any tips for approaching this with dress shops?

Aw thank you so much! ☺️

I think I am going to invest in a properly fitted bra before I go dress shopping! From what I hear it can make all the difference - we shall see haha Smiley smile

Thanks so much! I also learned just the other day that a properly fitted bra in the right style can actually minimize the size of your chest. I thought I was just doomed to have them loom large forever! I didn't believe the sales lady at the store, but I was shocked when I looked in the mirror. So that might be something else that could help underneath your dress. Good luck! I hope you find the perfect dress for you and feel beautiful on your day 😊

Your dress is gorgeous!! You look stunning Smiley smile This is hugely helpful, thank you so much Smiley smile It's all about balance and I find the dresses my mum sends (she's well-meaning but a completely different body shape from me) are giving me major anxiety because I just think all anyone will see will be my chest Smiley amazing

Obviously your style is up to you, but I recommend a wider ball gown skirt. I find that wider skirts with cinched-in waists balance me out. I also highly recommend straps with a low neckline (not too high, not too plunging) because it draws the eyes up to your face more. You can more easily wear your normal bra with them too. I'm an H/I cup, so I sympathize with the struggle.
I'm not sure about alternatives to traditional dress shops during the pandemic, but it's really great to go to places where you can try on your real size and buy off the rack so you know you'll be happy with the final look. I got married pre-pandemic and bought my dress at a warehouse sale. The neckline of my dress was too low and showed a lot of cleavage, but they had a belt in the same fabric as my dress, and I bought it so that I could add it to the dress in alterations.

Yesssss, that would be nice to try and see how it looks on you! You should keep me posted when you try and tell me what works out. I really meant strapless and said topless. 😂😂🤦🏽‍♀️ but yeah, no, you don’t want to be focusing on something else than just having a grand time at your biggest day everyday.

Oh yes, I don’t want to feel like I’m pulling it up all night! No thank you on the strapless! I’ll keep with my healthy dose of skepticism there, thank you very much 😆

That’s a really good point and also something that I’m worried about - I don’t want to go try on dresses where absolutely nothing I try on is remotely my size! It doesn’t help that my Mum and my sister are both naturally tiny .... I just see me being (unreasonably but unavoidably) mortified the whole time 😬

Yay! I’m glad that made sense lol. I think one shoulder or sleeves could be the way to go! I’m sure they’ll try and tell me to go strapless and “you can get strapless bras” but no thanks haha don’t want to be pulling my dress up all day!

If you're waiting to try on your dream dress, Ardene's has a $1 mask sale right now. I just picked up 2 white masks for my dress appointments! Might be nice to look back at the photos.

All of my masks are black so will be nice not to try on with a black mask!

Exactly! There was a dress I tried on that was stunning but because I didn't feel comfortable or confident in it I hated it even though everyone in the shop said it was beautiful. I couldn't justify ordering something that expensive in my size just to hope I'd love it.

Definitely agree with this. Although they can easily squeeze you into a smaller dress especially if its something you love, it does not look the best. Especially if you are bustier. I tried one on that was too small and they clipped me in and I hated it - the dress was beautiful and it is definitely a top three but I can not envision my self in it because it is not well fitted to me and it didn't feel right even though they can order it in my size and I would see how it properly fits a year later which isn't ideal on something that is pretty expensive like a wedding dress (and also my mom is buying it).

I'm not extremely busty but I'm 5'3 and quite hippy. Definitely take your time and if you're concerned, phone or email some salons. There are dresses out there that are designed to minimize the bust, and strapless doesn't, no matter how much boning and "support" the consultant says it has.

I'm a 20 bridal and there were 2 salons I went to that only carried up to a 12-14 in samples. Even though they clip the dresses it still doesn't give the right look or feeling. There is one salon in my city that stocks 10-24 in samples for every dress they stock and trying a dress that fits makes such a huge difference! No matter how much someone says "we can order your size".

I completely get where you are coming from. I first went wedding shopping about a month ago. I have never been and I had no idea what was out there in terms of all different shapes, straps or strapless and necklines. And for myself since I am considered plus-size (I am a street size 14-16 and in wedding dressing I have been able to fit in 18-22) and on top of that I have a very large bust area and I don't want to look like too much boobs.

I ultimately decided that I can not do strapless in anyway because it was too much even with the boning in the dress that I tried on and that the best way for me to contain the girls was either going with a spaghetti strap or a sleeve dress with a higher neckline. These are some dresses I tried on that helped me feel comfortable with my bust area being larger and it wasn't spilling out.

Hopefully this helps some what! My favorite one is the first photo but I am going to try on a dress soon one I have been looking at since I was engaged because a store is finally getting it in.

Oh yes, I totally understand what you’re going for.

I believe once you set up appointments for fitting, you’ll be able to find out what kind of top would work best for you. Also, topless can be one to avoid while an off the shoulder style and one shoulder detail would look good too.
But definitely at your appointment, you’ll definitely try on dresses to see how it would work for you.

    Hi Tunisha! ☺️
I’d like something less sleek and more ballgown - though not super poofy if that makes sense? Kind of an understated ballgown. No idea what kind of top I should go for!

I don’t have any appointments yet - though I think I need to get on that!

    Hello Abby 👋🏾
I personally believe that any type of dress can fit your body and bust. I learnt that I had to go up about 3/4sizes from my regular clothing size. Do you have ideas of what style you like and also, do you have an appointment for a fitting?
