Is my date picked too far away?

Genna, on January 1, 2020 at 20:01 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 18
I just got engaged the day before NYE.. I picked a date already September 3rd 2022! The reason I picked it was it’s a long weekend, it’s close to our dating anniversary, and it’s also close to my grandparents anniversary. I’m excited to start planing and get ready but everyone is saying it’s too long of an engagement, what are your opinions ! Thanks in advance 😊

Not at all. I'm picking a date in Oct 2022 for the Thanksgiving long weekend. I got engaged Jan 2019. I picked a later date so me and my fiance can save for the wedding.

We will be engaged for 4yrs by the time we get married in July. Nothing wrong with a long engagement if that's what works for you. We've had 2 kids & bought a house since we've been engaged & are paying the majority of the wedding ourselves so long engagement was needed lol

I don't think dates are considered far away unless you're already planning to send invites! Otherwise, as long as your date is perfect for you and the invites are sent at a reasonable time.

It's Definitely not too far away!!

Our engagement was 2 years before our wedding and while most people were polite about it, we did get some comments about how far it seemed, asked why we are waiting so long, etc.

Don't cave to pressure about people saying it's too far away. I find more and more couples have longer engagements nowadays (i.e. over a year vs engaged for 1 year or less).

My parents had a 6 month engagement so they definitely didn't understand the wait lol.

Hey! I got engaged on Dec. 30th 2017!!! Excellent choice in day Smiley tongue

As for the length of your engagement - there is no such thing as too far away. Me and my DH got married Oct. 5th 2019 and meanwhile one of his GM got engaged recently on their 10 year dating anniversary!! They waited 10 years to get engaged while we got engaged 10 months into our relationship.... so there is no right or wrong imo.

Nooo dont listen to them!! we did a longer engagement as we are paying for our wedding ourselves so we have time to save up and i have plenty of choices for vendors as a lot of them werent booked yet. a longer engagement is great you can tackle things on your to do list slowly and wont be rushed!

I actively started planning I think at 785 days lol. I got my venue, my hair/makeup person, photographer and DJ in august this year well over a year in advance. I love looking at marketplace for deals on bridal things. I have quite a few DIY projects I want to get done. I'm going to my second wedding show in a couple of weeks to book my bridal appointments because they have a percentage off if your dress if you buy it at their store and book your appointment at the wedding show. A long engagement gives you the chance to really plan what you want. Just do not buy anything until you have a clear view what you want, I've seen so much buyer regret with long engagements. You can watch websites for their sale dates (Black friday, semiannual sale and such).

Thanks ! I mean to me it’s two “years” just the fact that we have gotten engaged before the exact 24 month. I really want to start planning and discussing, but then I feel like maybe it’s two early ahah.

I have been engaged for about 7 years lol. We waited for a time that worked for us so we can have the wedding we want. The right wedding date is the one that works for you and your SO. Having so much time can save you so much money too. Not to mention give you time to save for the big day.

I think you are totally fine! Weddings nowadays are SO expensive that i don’t think any length of engagement is too long. This way, you will have plenty of time to plan and save money!

You can have as long of an engagement as wanted since there isn't anything wrong woth the idea.
I have friends that got engaged last year and they too will have a long engagdment until they figure out their family issues of coming out to their parents and getting them together. Then only will they choose a date.

    Hi Genna,
As someone who is clocking in at a four year engagement, I’d say you’re ok. I liked having all the extra time to plan things one at a time but if you want to have it earlier, go for it!

That's awesome! If you have the means to make it happen sooner, then you should consider doing that. It will feel less long to you, and you won't hit as many 'standstills' in your planning when you can't progress. 😊

Thank you 😊... I’ve been considering changing it to September 2021 but it’s to convince my fiancé. We have a little girl and a new home and all the bills that go with it lol. I didn’t really realize how truly far away it was until I actually counted it up !

Hi Genna! Congratulations and welcome to Wedding Wire! 😊🎊

Your engagement would be nearly 3 years, which is technically considered long. But the length of your engagement is a very subjective decision and you have to do what works best for you and your future spouse. You can take into account things like how long it will take you to save, any major life events you have coming up, if you plan on buying a home or starting a family, or even if you just have a special date in your heart. If September 3rd 2022 feels right to you, then go for it! If you want to get married sooner, then that's perfectly fine, too. 😊
