Is anyone doing their own makeup?

Wawa, on November 7, 2020 at 15:22 Posted in Beauty 0 7
I’m nervous about makeup artists reusing materials with covid around. My makeup artist canceled on me and now I’m rethinking about whether I need to hire one at all. Is anyone doing their own makeup?

Thank you Tracy! This is absolutely my worst fear... to come out in makeup that I will hate. I know we can do test trials, but it’s hard to schedule this in during a pandemic.

I usually do my own make up for everything, then my first marriage had it done and HATED it, it was so not me. So find a friend or relative that is good at it. Those people you know that you look at say wow, their make up looks great. They will be able to help. I'm fortunate that my hairstylist will be doing my hair that day and offered to throw in doing my make up (known her for years) so she knows what I like.

Best thing is practice long before, then get someone to take your photos with the flash, keep doing so until you find a look that lasts and you feel comfortable in.

Thanks Hailey! I was sort of thinking the same thing... because I typically do my own makeup for all occasions. So I might be ok watching a YouTube video and do my own Smiley smile

I am planning to do my own makeup. I am going to watch a lot of YouTube videos and practice a lot. Then I will do a trial on myself for my engagement photos which will be causal. Then I can see how it photographs with her style and make any adjustments for the big day. If you aren’t doing engagement photos or have already done them, you could always have your photographer come for getting ready photos, and show you some photos of your makeup so you can adjust quickly. Good luck 😉

I'm doing my own makeup but I used to be a makeup artist. Makeup for photography can be quite different than every day makeup so you'll want to do your research if you decide to do it yourself. I highly suggest watching a lot of youtube tutorials regarding what products work best for photography and different techniques you can use to create the look you want. It's also possible you may need to buy new product and that can add up quick, so from a financial perspective it's typically cheaper to hire a makeup artist.

As far as cleanliness goes, makeup artists are always (or at least should be) diligent about sanitizing their products/brushes and ensuring no contamination happens in the first place. If you are using a competent makeup artist they should be cleaning their brushes before and after every job and have single use tools for things like mascara. If they wear a mask while doing your makeup the risk of transmission should be similar to a hairstylist doing your hair.

Are you confident that you can do your own makeup? Myself, I know that is beyond what I am capable of. I can do mascara and lipstick but for my big day I want to look the best version of myself and a bit glamorous. My MOH is amazing at doing her own makeup and I have no doubt that she will look amazing doing her own. Some people just can do it. I think if you can get the look you want and feel safer, then go for it.

Just so you know all makeup artists are taking extra precautions mine. Mine sanitized all her brushes and sprayed them before reuse. I would personally want my make up professionally done especially if you hired a photographer. Most makeup artists promote how safe they are. And you have every right to ask and they also wear a mask.
