Invite wording

Alissa, on March 30, 2018 at 01:55 Posted in Wedding reception 0 7
A friend and I are both hosting similar parties and discovered we are having the same issue. While we won't be serving a dinner or buffet, we plan to have a ton of food being passed out and on trays and stations. I don't want guests to expect dinner, but there will be so many hors d'oeuvres we still want them to come hungry. How would you word the invitations to state this so that our guests know what to expect? Any thoughts?

I agree with saying Cocktail reception and we are kind of doing something along the same lines. We are having guests RSVP through this site and since there is no meal choices I created a FAQ section and wrote this:

    1. I don't see an option for what I want to eat, are you going to feed me?

Yes, don't worry - you won't go hungry! We are doing things a little differently by not having a formal sit down dinner. You all know us and should recognize we'd rather have a fun, mingle type setting. We will be starting off with lots of Hors D'Oeuvres and then moving to a couple chef manned action stations with super-delicious dinner choices. There will be a mix of traditional tables for sitting and cocktail tables to stand at when you just feel like a snack. There will also be dessert service with a few yummy selections. Please do let us know however if you have any dietary needs.

Were also not doing a dinner so our ceremony starts at 7 pm and we put on invites hors d’oeuvres reception to follow.

If you say "Cocktail Reception to Follow", people should know that means the less formal, appies/drinks option. Not really seated tables, but more of a party atmosphere. If you are utilizing the Wedding Wire wedding website builder, you can add on your wedding details page that there will not be a seated dinner, but passed hor d'oeuvres and drinks. (easier to be wordy on the website, than on your invitations).

Our invitations have the start time to the ceremony then say "cocktails, canapes and luncheon to follow". I'd just put "cocktails and canapes to follow" (or hor d'oeuvres or tapas)

Stephanie's phrasing is great, or even "Ceremony at this time followed by cocktails and light refreshment" or "followed by a cocktail reception to follow"

You could describe it as tapas possibly. I went to a wedding last fall and that was what they had for food. There were a couple of stations but it was all hors d'oeuvres and I think that communicated it to the guests.

I would say "Ceremony at this time followed by an hors d'oeuvres reception at this time"
