Invitation Waves

Amelia, on January 3, 2020 at 09:06 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 9

Happy New Year, everyone!

The holidays have come and gone and - sure enough - FH's grandma accosted us on Boxing Day about our guest list. We don't have room for everyone she wants so we're definitely going to have to have a A-list and B-list for sending invitations. When it comes to sending out invites in waves, should the first one have an earlier RSVP date to make sure we have enough time to send out the next wave or would it be fine to just have one RSVP date that's a couple months before the wedding? What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! The two dates sound pretty unanimous.

Setting 2 different dates for the waves is a great way to have guest respond better. B list will be thinking they past the date of the same as A list. This way you can have your due date set month before the day and have your final count in time for vendors.

I think different dates are a great idea. Like others have said you can chase the first wave people while the second wave goes out and hopefully you'll have answers in time to invite the third wave!

We had about 3-4 weeks for each wave to respond. We had 2 and a half months between sending the first wave and needing our final count. We are doing a destination wedding so the timelines differ slightly from the traditional, but I hope that helps!

For sure have two RSVP deadlines - most people that RSVP as no were the ones that I had to contact at that deadline.

For our first wave we sent out invites at the 5 month to the wedding mark, RSVP by 3 month mark, sent out the other wave immediately after, RSVP by the 1 month mark. Gave about a month and a half for people to think about it (gotta take into consideration that snail mail takes about a week away from the timeline of them getting them).

Ugh I was afraid of that. How much time have you left between the two deadlines?

We did multiple waves of invitations and we always set different RSVP dates. We would let the first RSVP date pass before sending out another wave so that we could rightfully harass people that hadn't yet responded. I've learned that the vast majority of people will wait until the very last minute, or until you come knocking, to give an answer. I wouldn't recommend having everyone respond by the same date because that's very likely to happen!
