Hurricanes and honeymoons

Sasha, on September 7, 2017 at 10:08 Posted in Honeymoon 0 19
So our honeymoon was going to be Turks and Caicos, we paid for it months ago but now hurricane Irma is supposed to direct hit the islands. Assuming it's anything like what happened in Barbuda, I think we will have to cancel. I'm just curious to know if anyone else is affected by the hurricane in this way and what you are thinking if doing?
Of course my first concern is the people of the affected and I'm monitoring the situation and praying for them! I was just curious to know if anyone else was planning on honeymooning in the Caribbean. Ugh I just feel so horrible for all the people and animals in the path of the hurricane. I hate feeling so helpless Smiley sad

My husband and I are in a similar position. We got married this summer and wanted to book a honeymoon in the Caribbean but are waiting to do that until hurricane season is over. I'm with you: I'm concerned that the people in that part of the world don't have adequate protection and shelter. And what about all the wild animals?! Are any able to escape or hide? Smiley sad Praying for everyone's safety. This is so tragic.

Yep, her home evacuated everyone to another home farther from the hurricane. She's having fun meeting new people.

Normally travel insurance covers it if you can't go where you were going because of weather.

My grandmother lives in the line of the hurricane and I'm currently very glad we didn't decide to get married in her garden. Eeek.

I just received word here is the email they sent:Hello, Carol and the rest of the family. By the Lord´s grace here in Holguin the damage was minimal as compared to the rest of Cuba. The wind was scaring and many branches of the trees were broken, but only a few poorer houses received minor damages. In Central Cuba everything was devastated, the national electric power system was severely damaged but the Government has given priority to it and we have power since yesterday evening. I will pass Anibal your email, I am sure they will be happy to read you and will thank you for your care. Best wishes to you and your dear ones. May God bless you all! Pastor Juan Ramirez

Yes I'm still waiting to hear from them, but I'm not too worried yet. All the info I have been getting is pics and updates, from people either coming back, or from people that still have an internet connection. This was a bad one, but they have been through many. The Cubans are a very resilient bunch, they've had to be. It's is sad though that we aren't hearing much about the Islands and that Florida is front and center. We heard from my son's grandparents about half a day before the hurricane hit, and they were prepared as much as they could be. I've heard there has been 21 deaths, but it could be more now.

Wow Carol I am sorry to hear about your family. They do seem like strong resilient people! I am hoping they are okay and you hear from them soon. I wish the news would talk more about what's going on in the Carinbean. Of course Florida is getting hit too, but a lot of people do have family out on the islands and I'm sure would love some news of the damage and progress being made.

It was whatever people wanted to give, because every cent helps! And we had the mc bring up that the groom had an announcement and he explained it and then put in money to start it off and we kissed.

That is a very honourable thing to do, Chelsea. I know you don't want to hear praise but I wish more people would do what they can to help people out. Kudos to your idea.

Hi Sasha, I truly don't think you have to worry to much. I have family in Cuba, and we have been through many scary hurricanes with them. With our sitting here worried to death about them, and to them its just another hurricane. They have lost power, and phones and are unusually up within a day or 2. You will find that the Cuban people and all the Caribbean people are very resilient in these storms. The hotel areas are a bit different and of course take the most damage, but you would be surprised how quickly they are up and running again as if nothing happened. To them the tourist industry is the main source of money coming in. I went down to visit my family one September and road out a hurricane and with them in their house, in their town. It was not the size of Irma, but still scary non the less. When it was over, we all came together cleaning and picking things up, clearing debris, the whole town worked together, and the rest of the Islands work that way also. By October it will be like nothing ever happened, we went one year about 2 weeks after what we thought was a bad one, and you couldn't even tell anything happened. I haven't heard back from my family yet, but I'm sure I will hear something soon.

Yes, both FH and I hate the clinking glasses! Did you have levels of donations like 5 dollars, ten dollars, 20 dollars or was it whatever people wanted to give? And did you warn your guests you planned on doing that? If so how did you let them know?

Anytime! It worked great, and the guests actually enjoyed it as well! We had one of the guests come up with over $100 and he started with the smallest bill, waited for a kiss, then put in the next bill and went all the way up to either a $50 or a $100 bill! And the best part.....noo annoying clinking glasses!

I love this idea SO much!!! I was looking for another idea for kisses instead of games and tapping glasses, I think I'll run this by my FH for our wedding. Thanks for sharing!

That's so amazing of you to have done that! 430$ is fantastic! Thank goodness you guys were able to enjoy your honeymoon and make it back ok. I'm sure that would have been a scary ride for sure. I believe we do have insurance on the trip so I'm hoping we should be able to get reimbursed.
Thank you for the inspiration, I feel like we may have to do some sort of donation at our wedding for hurricane relief. What a wonderful idea Smiley smile

My honeymoon was in the Caribbean as well. We left Jamaica during the start of this whole storm and we were flying through it. Our seatbelt sign was on pretty much the entire flight home. Did you get insurance (I forget what the actual name for it is), that way if anything happens, you are able to rebook for another time? We paid extra for it, but we had it, just in case anything like that were to happen. My church has been praying for everyone as well that is being affected by this hurricane. I also don't like feeling helpless. We did a charity fundraiser at our wedding; instead of people clinking glasses for us to kiss, they had to pay money, and the more money they donated, the better the kiss. It was originally going to help the kids in Africa...But I think we will be donating the money to help the people affected by this hurricane. It is only $430, but at least I can feel like I contributed a bit.
