How personalized should a florist be?

Lyla, on July 1, 2018 at 01:21 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 8
So I booked with my local florist shop awhile back to have 5 bridesmaid bouquets, my bouquet, 5 boutonnières, and my fiancé’s.. it comes out to roughly 550$. My question is how personalized should they be? I was told originally to give them afew weeks before I could book an appointment, only to come in the few weeks later for my apt and it’s literally us standing at the counter with her for five minutes. I live in a small town so I don’t see why that requires such a long wait, but whatever. I asked if I’d be able to see a rough look of how they will make the bouquet and that I wanted some blush and ivory, they said they’d call in two weeks to give me a better estimate and I could probably see a bouquet. I ended up waiting a month before calling and asked if it was booked with them and they said they would book it with the distributors and that my first estimate was still the same. I don’t know if I’m over thinking it but I feel like there should be a little more personalization, I’m just worried that they’re not going to be what I want. What was your experience with your florist? Should I expect more? Do a walk-in and ask? or just trust them? I’m 28 days away from the wedding and haven’t spoken to them in the last 2-3 months.

Thankyou! Yeah I ended up going in yesterday with my cousin.. which was good because they had a filler flower in there which I thought was really ugly haha. They were a lot better this time, she pulled out afew different flowers for me to see and choose from. , they told me I can bring in a wrap for my bouquet and will have it ready for me the day of and my quote is now 600$ just to be safe. She was a lot more informative this time and helped to reassure me. Thankyou for everyone’s help and input, I really appreciate it!

My decorator is also my florist and we have had much more communication than this. She hasn't put together an actual sample but we did go through photos together, what i like and didn't like such as having a round bouquet vs an asymmetrical bouquet, specific flowers that i did and didnt like, even the colour of the ribbon to wrap around it.

With it being less than a month till your wedding and it has been a while since you have spoken with them, I would just walk in to the store and have a conversation with them, just to make sure everything is to go as planned.

That does seem a little strange to be honest. I booked with my florist and was at my appointment with her for 30-60 minutes. We talked about colours, flower shapes and textures, how big I wanted them, what the arrangements would look like and how the boutonnieres and corsages would match.

I would definitely check in with them if you haven't heard anything in that long.

That honestly seems a little strange, and not very professional. I haven’t ordered my wedding flowers yet, but I order flowers for everything, weather it be Mother’s Day, family get together, any thing I can bring flowers to I go put an order in immediately. My florist who I’ve gone to for about 6 years, talks me through everything and brings out her flower book, and let’s me choose everything I want in my bouquet/arrangement, then shows me different arrangement styles, and either makes it to fit my budget, or gives me an estimate. And I mean we’re sitting there for a half an hour to an hour so I feel like wedding flowers should at least take that long to discuss. And it’s always 15% down on my order. She literally doesn’t miss a detail and calls me ahead of time even it’s a month or two early so I can see the flowers that are similar to mine just to make sure I still like them.

If you’re 28 days away, and haven’t spoken to them for a few months, I would do a check in, and if they seem untrustworthy and like they don’t have there stuff together, then maybe look into another florist? I honestly feel like trust is a main pillar for planning because you don’t want to have to worry about it 24/7. I wish you luck and I hope everything turns out well for you! (Sorry for the long reply lol)

That's a tough one! I know she used to take a 15% deposit just so the customer knew that it was "official" she would also write out an invoice with the exact numbers of bouquets, boutonnieres, etc so there was no miscommunication!

I ordered flowers from Safeway for an event a while back and they did a similar thing too for invoicing and deposit, but in not sure if that's customary or not!

I personally love paying deposits as a bride, because it makes each bill seem a little better and less intimidating as the wedding gets closer

No I haven’t.. I got the impression that they thought I should have known all this already so I just left it at that.. I don’t want to make them feel like they’re not capable but at the same time I think there needs to be better communication. Maybe I’ll walk in tomorrow to get an update. theyre my only vendor that hasn’t been super in depth.. should I have some form of contract or an invoice atleast do you think? I asked about putting a deposit down and they said no.

Wow that seems a little strange! I'm using my grandma as she used to be a florist, but I know that she used to take her wedding clients for coffee and have a proper meeting, much like photographers do. She got thethem to bring in colour samples at that time (before pinterest was a thing haha) and get insight on 1 or 2 flowers that they wanted, and then she would take that info and run with it. Her customers were always in love with the finished product!

Have you tried contacting them in these last few months?
