How many tiers for a cupcake stand?

The cupcake size can depend on how much space you need per tier. I would say 3-4 tiers to spread out the cupcakes plus if your planning to have small cake to cut.

I think a two tier plus one more tier for your cake will do!

But make sure the top layer is at least 6" (it does not need to be bigger than the cake itself, just at least the same size) and the stand needs to be very sturdy if it's going to be that tall. I'd suggest not having all the cupcakes on the stand and making the stand shorter to be more supportive. The loading capacity of the top 2 and bottom 3 tiers is listed there. Cakes and cupcakes are much heavier than people realize!

If your top tier is 8" (you'll need 8" to steadily hold a 6" cake), two additional tiers should be more than enough. It really depends on the size of your plates on the stand.
