How far would you go for a wedding?

Lindsay, on August 12, 2018 at 15:44 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 7
In my small city (around 28,000 people) we have attended events or weddings at all the venues, and they are all very similar and cookie cutter traditional venues. I was looking at getting married out of town, in a lake setting, so how far would you travel for someone else's wedding? Is it unreasonable to plan a wedding within a two and a half hour drive? There would be hotels within 40 minutes for guests, some room at the small resort for close family and wedding party, and trailer campsites across the lake. Is it selfish to plan something so far out of town to get the wedding I want?

I think it's best to check with your VIPs and see how far they would travel. I've traveled to different countries for weddings, but that took months of planning, time off work, lots of expense... so I wouldn't do it for a casual acquaintance but would for a close friend. I think it is fine to have it a few hours away in a location you love as long as you are ok with some people being unable to attend.

Have your wedding where you want and the people who care about you will do anything in their power to be there. The furthest I've ever driven is 11 hours, furthest I've flown is Yellowknife or Holland.

Plan where you want. Its your day. Driving wise. Ive driven 5 hours for a wedding. And have flown for weddings too. People that want to be there will try their best to do it.

One thing as a wedding guest that is always important to me. Is either hotels close by or a shuttle if they arent. As we drink at weddings. So when it came to me booking a venue. Proximity to hotel was key

Your wedding = what you want. End of story. If your core group (the people you couldn't imagine getting married without) would have issues, that's when you may try and adjust or compromise... but if your deal breaker people are there, then everything else is just cake!

For example, my FH and I were considering a fall wedding in Arizona... but even though it would be cheaper to have the wedding there, and many close family members thought it would be fun to travel, my 2 step-sisters would have a hard time affording to go, and they would have issues with getting people to watch their kids. My sisters were deal breakers, so we stayed local.

I think that it is entirely fine for you to plan the wedding you want wherever you want it. I would just keep in mind that some people might not be willing to travel that far but that doesn't mean you should change your mind. Our wedding was happening 3 hours from where we live and most people attended that we invited.

I think it’s absolutely fine to plan a wedding wherever you’d like, just have realistic expectations about who will and won’t be willing/able to travel for it.

We've personally travelled from Toronto to Victoria Beach, MB for FH’s cousins wedding (a cousin I had met once previously and he had only seen approximately 6 times in his life).
