Homemade dj hack ideas?

Leah, on October 1, 2018 at 13:57 Posted in Wedding reception 0 4
My cousin will be DJ-ing our ceremony and reception via a premade Spotify or iTunes playlist.

The only “gear” that he’ll likely need is my iPad and an audio jack, but I’d like to make the set up look a bit more official.

Does anyone know of any DJ set up hacks? Thinking a table and a stand for the tablet, and maybe a boombox for the “DJ stands here” feel?

Think if it as a mildly campy but functional stationary costume. I’m at work so I haven’t done a search on Pinterest as yet.

Have you done or will you do something similar?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

That sounds really cute! It also depends on your budget because you can do that route and still maintain a pretty decent sound.

If your budget a little bigger, you can rent audio equipment from Long & McQuade to give it a real tech-y feel! Usually when I did audio set-up for touring theatre performances, I had to rent a compatible aux chord, speakers, a mixing board (cables come included). It all can plug into a phone or a laptop with some kind of playback program (i.e. iTunes or Windows Media player). You can ask them at Long & McQuade what you would need for your set-up and they'll happily help!

There's free audio programs like SFX or QLab (with free tutorials online) where you can build playlists and set them up so he just has to hit GO. When set up properly as a playlist, it plays automatically with proper fades to other songs. Once it's started, your cousin can manually adjust the levels on the mixing board in case some songs are louder than others, or cut the music and have announcements over a mic (also rentable and plugs into the board). It gives it more of a professional sound than the start-stop of Spotify playlists.

I don’t have an idea for a DJ booth but I would recommend a sound board or mixing board for the computer. We used a Spotify playlist and there was one that came with the sound system we rented. Made it easier to balance sound and adjust volume

One piece of advice will be turn the iPad on airplane mode and download your playlist. This will avoid any feedback/static or pings from emails and notifications during the music.
