Hiding ugly fixtures?

Rachel, on November 3, 2019 at 22:13 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 21
Our venue has a very large 60" tv mounted to the wall. The rest of the venue is beautiful - I'm trying to decide whether to play a slideshow and roll with it, or try to hide it with a tulle backdrop maybe as I think we may use that space for our first dance.

Also, they installed permanent picnic tables right where we planned on having our ceremony, so we've had to change that idea as well unfortunately Smiley sad
Are there any "unsightly" aspects at your venue that have changed your plans or required some effort to hide?

There is a big bison head mounted on the wall above the fireplace in our reception room. He cannot be moved. Our coordinator said that people in the past have just embraced him, and decorating him with a floral crown or greenery. So that is what we plan to do!

Exactly! Also you have plenty of time from now to the date of your wedding to add pictures over the upcoming holidays, if that is what you decide. Or to scour Pinterest for ideas to do a DIY cover up.

Venue is gorgeous. Finding a way to cover up what doesn't need to be seen will be possible. Solutions such as covers over wood panels extending to the fullest lengths of the picnic table giving the illusion of a buffet table. Thin cardboard to the size of the tv with material hanging can give the look of not knowing the tv is there.

It definitely is a lovely venue, the pole was just in the way half the time lol

Oh wow!! Your venue is beautiful! But I see what you mean. I guess every venue has its challenges! In the end I know it doesn't matter as long as everyone has a good time, and that I'm the only one who even cares about the tv lol

Thank you! I think it worked out for the best. That's a great idea about using the engagement photos! It sure would be an easier solution to hiding it while bringing some "us" into the space Smiley smile

I would use it as for a slideshow - you have it so might as well use it!

I definitely relate to working with unsightly props. The pole at our ceremony site kind of hid our best woman and during family photos, our photographer kept having to maneuver around it lol

At least it’s was something that wasn’t too much of a disaster and easy to get over. The deck will look awesome and the ceremony pictures will be gorgeous. If you have done or plan to do your engagement photos you could add those to the slide show. Although, it sounds like the space that has the tv is not the central part of the room , perhaps you could keep the focus on the other parts of the room so no one will really be paying attention. Hiding it in plain sight if that makes sense.

Tori, I remember seeing your post about this! My heart just broke for you, but I hope your day turned out wonderful regardless. I was upset for about a day having to move our ceremony 20 feet, I can't imagine how you must have felt!

Yes we are using the deck for the ceremony, so I'm not too upset about it, it was just a shock when we went back and discovered it! Glad to find out now and not the day of setting it all up. I'm not sure how much the TV bothers me yet haha, we don't have enough photos to fill up a slideshow very well so I may try to DIY a cover up.

That makes sense. I have been there we go when they do the dragon boat races. It is really pretty. Could you use the deck as your ceremony space? The backdrop of the Glenmore Reservoir would be beautiful. I am not sure about the tv I guess it would depend on how much it bothers you. For me if something sticks out or doesn’t fit with what I have in my head I tend to fester over it. You could always play a video/slide show of your relationship over the years as you are doing your first dance.

I would also go with the slideshow. You might as well make use of the eyesore!

Our venue has a room with some (in my opinion) outdated art, but we're only using that room for cocktails and appetizers for less than half an hour so I'll live with it.

I would say to have the TV as a slide show and it can even have your new names of Mr. & Mrs. ____ on a slide Smiley smile

As for the relating to this - YUP! We were supposed to get married on the dock on the river at our venue but due to the heavy rain the river was too high and it had to be pulled out. So then we had to get married just at their other ceremony site - which was whatever.... not nearly as nice... but then it decided to RAIN ALL DAY on our wedding so we got soaked.... oh well! We still got married!

Go with the slide show - people will have fun looking at photos of your lives together and before you met.

I'm glad we went back for a second look after booking. It's our own fault for not noticing when we booked, as all the other tables can be moved except these 2 in the middle of the lawn. I think the tulle is the best way to cover things, just a bother trying to hang it or create a backdrop stand for it somehow

I think the picnic tables were there when we booked, but they were surrounded by regular picnic tables that can be moved, if that makes sense? So I don't think it is a recent installation, just something we weren't aware of. We're getting married at the Glenmore Sailing Club here in Calgary.

I agree with Amanda, I'd be fuming if the picnic benches had been a plan when I booked the venue. Even if it wasn't, they still should have called you, just a little notice or something!
Anyway, at my venue it's a curling club, so there's a trophy case on the back wall where the dancefloor is, so we're going to have to cover that up some how. It'll probably just be tulle since the case is back lit, so the light shining through actually looks nice

I am sorry to hear that you need to change your ceremony spot. Was this something that was mentioned when you went to view the site? Even if it wasn’t set in stone if there was a possibility they should have said something. I would be a little pissed and irritated about the whole thing. Where in Calgary is your venue if you don’t mind me asking?
