Help- tipping?!

Victoria, on March 26, 2022 at 10:56 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 4
Hi everyone,

I’m interested to hear what everyone is doing in terms of tipping! I have hired a MUA and hair stylist (two separate professionals) who own their own businesses so the $ is 100% theirs… in terms of tipping what is everyone’s thoughts? The hair stylist is $125 a service and it seems like a lot to tip 15-20%. I know if she was working for a salon absolutely we need to tip appropriately but I feel like I don’t need to as much with a business owner setting her own prices… what are everyone’s thoughts? Genuinely curious to know what the rule of thumb/common practice is!
I was also debating getting my photographer and DJ a gift card for the Keg or something as a thank you with a nice card. Is this appropriate? Do you think they’d just prefer cash?
Thanks in advance! 😊

I think $100 on top of the $125?? That's way more than necessary. Or is that for multiple services? Or for the photographer and DJ? I'm sure they appreciate anything though ultimately!!

I didn't do much for a cash tip for the vendors as it would be done. The only thing done for them is a Thank you card with a personalized message. A gift card for the videographer and DJ is good enough from the general restaurants seems right as they can enjoy it anywhere they go to eat out. The hairstylist is her own boss is up to you to tip her if you do like her work as it is beyond what you expected. It isn't required to give though.

Thanks Carmel! Definitely appreciate that. I was inclined to tip something to our MUA and hair stylist but tipping 15-20% on 14 services was making me have a mini heart attack lol. I wonder if $100 each would suffice? Thanks again! And good thoughts about the gift cards, I’ll stick with cash.

I think because they own their own business you only need to tip if you feel they did an exceptional service and went above and beyond your expectations - I also don't think it needs to be 15%+ in this case. This is a constant debate on my local FB group page and many business owners say they love getting a tip (obviously), don't expect it, but very much would love a Google Review if clients are happy with their services. As for the DJ and photographer - I'd do cash over a specific gift card for sure, unless you know they like and go to the Keg.
