Help

Vanny, on June 6, 2020 at 17:09 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 11

Hi guys! My fiance and I had to make the heart wrenching and difficult decision to postpone our wedding that was supposed to happen this August and my MOH was still waiting for her dress to come in. We went back in March and she found one from this boutique, and only put down a deposit. I e-mailed the store letting them know our decision and asked about the remaining balance she had to owe back because she didn't pay full price for the dress yet and it was originally planned to still go in for alterations. The owner is willing to hold the dress in the shop until next year and is asking for the remaining balance to be paid. What should we do? Should my friend just pick up the dress and leave it with her, or leave it in the shop and do alterations next year?

First, I'm so sorry about your postponement. We also made that decision so I know how difficult it must have been.

Second, I would HIGHLY recommend picking up the dress and taking it home. You never know what might happen with the dress boutique in the coming months and that is a long time for them to hold a dress. I'm sure they would be fine, but it's much better to be safe than sorry. You can always return there for alterations or go elsewhere.

Paying for it and picking it up now seems like a good idea. This way you've got the dress and alterations can be done closer to the date. While it might suck to pay for alterations included in the price and not need them, to me the peace of mind knowing I had the dress would be worth it.

Oh gotcha!! Yeah that seems super strange that they want her to pre-pay for alterations without knowing what those will be / if they’ll even be necessary!

My friend doesn't wanna pay her the balance though until she knows for sure that she'll be needing alterations. I'm going to try to ask if remaining balance can be held off until next year but when my friend called it sounded like they really wanted the balance to be paid off

If I were you, I would pay the remaining and take the dress home. You never know what could happen! Then when you're ready to do the alterations, you can take it in and get it done Smiley smile

To be honest if I were her I’d want pay the remaining balance and take the dress home with me. Sometimes these shops work with seamstresses who aren’t really all that great with alterations.

This gives her the option to take the dress anywhere she would like to have it altered!
Unless the price of dress included alterations but that is unusual for Bridesmaid dresses.

Hmm.. if I were your MOH I’d probably just pay the balance now and then leave the unaltered dress at the shop until next year so they can ensure proper storage etc.!! Unless she’s for some reason really keen to have it in her possession ASAP (eg if the shop has been sketchy or unresponsive, you don’t trust them to store it properly, etc.)

    Good luck girl!!

It sounds like either way, the boutique needs to be paid the remainder of the dress’ worth now, so it’s really up to you and her. Could she pick up the dress, then return to the boutique next year for fittings? If there haven’t been complaints, I’d stick with their alterations since a good sewer is hard to find

The postponement date will allow your MOH to get her alterations next year since she paid the deposit. It seems right if the boutique is willing to hold off until next year until she can come in.
