Gratuity for a Reverend

Momofbride(Kim), on January 29, 2019 at 22:50 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 11

Anyone tipping your pastor/officiant or just paying the fee? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I will be tipping my officiant. I may either give her a little gift or a cash tip, but I will most likely going with my moms good friend so a gift is more likely

We paid our officiant the fee directly. No tips

What about a non-religious officiant? I don't think my officiant is associated with any church - so can/should I tip her?

I like the idea of paying a fee and then a personalized gift or donation.

We are paying our Officiant $500 for our ceremony and another $100 for her to come to our actual Rehearsal. We are getting married at The Country Club. I can definitely see us sending her a picture and a thank you note.

So maybe the best option would be a larger donation and if we want to give the Reverend something an actual gift like a Pen Set or something he can use?

It’s just a donation to the church. I’m not a financial person but asked a friend and she said it’s basically a tax thing-it gets difficult to tip a pastor/priest/reverend/minister because a church is considered a not for profit. We had wanted to give a gift card and were told it gets tricky with CRA. So, you can give more than the suggested amount but it will go to the church, not the minister.

Generally, yes - it's a kind gesture that is sure to be appreciated. Doing this for your daughter means that they will not be able to do one at the church the same day, and so will not have that option to have a donation made.

I should have given more information. We don't attend this church, the pastor is just being nice enough to marry our daughter off premises in an outdoor ceremony. Would an additional donation to the church still apply?

I agree - you don't tip your pastor if you're getting married in a church, but a donation to the church is normal, above and beyond whatever fee is charged for using the church.

We are getting married at our church and its by donation. We are going to give more than the average of what he said most people do.
