Getting Married On Family Property

Madison, on January 29, 2022 at 09:30 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 4
Hi ladies!

I am so excited to have finally joined this group. This one is for those of you who got married/are planning to get married on YOUR families property. When I was younger, it was my dream to get married in my backyard (we lived in the country so there is room for the ceremony/tent/bathrooms/etc.).
As I begin our wedding planning, I’m fixated on all of the logistics — is part of the excitement of the day being uncomfortable with the NEW and unknown? Do I want to get ready in my childhood bedroom? Do I want to walk down an isle on the backyard I have walked a million and one times? Does the planning become more overwhelming with all of the more things to consider (compared to a venue where everything is laid out)?
Let me know your thoughts!! Thanks in advance💗

I love the idea of a home wedding where you have the space to have guests enjoy time where the space is wide open. It would seem overwhelming to have to deal with more rentals to have everything arranged with tables, table clothes and everything related to the set. The centerpieces being simple and catering/bartended enough to feed everyone or pot luck to avoid costs of food and drinks.

Venues on the other hand are expensive though they do have a lot to offer for the price quoted as to just getting the centerpieces figured out for what suits you both and colours that will complete your vision for the day.

Are you planning to have the whole wedding on the family property or just the ceremony before moving to a different venue for the reception? How many are you looking to host? Your logistical challenges will depend on your answers to these questions. For example, it's very manageable to just have the ceremony with a small group on the property but there are a lot more to consider when doing the full wedding there, especially if you have a particularly large guest list.

A lot of people take for granted unspoken venue perks like having plenty of parking, access to a dedicated power source, or being able to use a bathroom with minimal wait times. And once you factor in things like renting portable toilets, the costs may end up being more than what a staffed venue can cost.

These are just a few things to think about when hosting a wedding in a personal space not staffed by professionals.

    Hello Madison,
Welcome to WeddingWire! Also, want to wish you all the best in your wedding planning!

That sounds like a lovely idea with what you always wishes and hoped for. I think as you get deeper into planning, you’re always questioning your plans and or other people make you question your plans with their questions or curiosity, haha. It is bound to happen. I personally believe that since you’ve always wanted it to be that way, why not. Also, it comes into taken budget for your wedding into consideration.
For myself, I never thought about the whole aspects of being married when I was younger, wasn’t a thing for me. Until I met my hubby. Also, why planning, there were so many options because we wanted to save for our house and we wanted it small. We were thinking courthouse and in 5 years have a celebration, but then I thought it was too much and don’t want to be pregnant or have a kid on the way with that celebration. Haha. Then I told him I wanted to do it small in the parents backyard (but the backyard was so small and wasn’t set up). So we found a lovely intimate place to get married. So all in all, it very much depends upon how you saw it and if it will work out for you.

It was always my dream to get married in my grandmas backyard. Her house was my safe space as a child and I have sooo many fond memories there! My uncle also lives around the corner and there's a trail connecting their backyards so I always pictured myself walking from my uncles backyard through the trail into my grandmas backyard as the start of the aisle. But my grandmas place is in Ontario and my Fiancé and I live in Alberta.
Early in our wedding planning stages we started to figure out costs and realized to get married at my grandmas wed have to spend like $3000 before we even started paying for wedding expenses so we decided to get married where we live. Maybe one year we can have an anniversary party at my grandmas!
