Gah! Help a girl out - please!!

Lindsay, on January 22, 2020 at 19:48 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 11

Hey fellow brides - my brain is running in circles and I can't seem to make any decisions. I'm hoping you guys can help offer some insight/suggestions Smiley smile

Here's the situation - I'm eloping at a venue roughly about two hours away from where I live. I'm struggling with choosing my last two vendors - flowers and cake. The reason I'm struggling is because there isn't a ton of options in the town we're eloping so I would likely be looking at vendors closer to where I live.

My DOC has offered to pick up anything necessary on the day of and transport it for us to the venue. But I worry that asking her to pick up the florals (bouquet, boutonniere and one centerpiece) as well as a cake would be asking too much. Also, should I be worried about anything getting damaged in transport?

Of course, I could pay any potential vendor a delivery fee for them to transport it directly but I would be looking at another couple hundred dollars in order to do so.....

Gah! Dilemma!

Any comments appreciated!

Use your DOC if they are willing to do this, it's part of their job to lessen your stress. For the cake, find out if they have ever handled the same (or bigger) as yours and talk to the previous brides they helped out. If they have never handled a cake your size, it may be worth the delivery charge. I'm surprised there is no baker in town that can accommodate you Smiley sad

I'd go DOC - or at least ask if they could. Alternatively, if the DOC is from the venue, they may be able to provide some suggestions of closer vendors? Smiley smile

The DOC does what you need and if pick up is being offered, take up on it since its saving you the time and effort to worry more about not being at the venue itself and losing the money. The bakery delivers for free and nearby, then your home free. A delivery charge is added and your willing to pay it, consider the option of paying it to reach safer and by the baker itself. Flowers you have ordered and getting picked up by the DOC will know what to ensure by name and order for you at the florist.

You can ask the baker their recommendation. Our cake isn't going far and is just one tier so ours said paying for delivery wasn't necessary. She even mentioned that had we had multiple tiers or complicated frosting she would have insisted or had us sign a waiver in case it was damaged en route.

I would have your day of coordinator do it. its part of her job. also shes just picking up florals so her car will have more than enough room for a cake is fine!

Probably. Anything more than 1 layer I’d say no though

I'm only doing a three layer (one tier) 6" cake (similar to the below photo) - do you think it could survive transport by someone other than the baker?

I agree with Megan - if your DOC offered to, then take advantage of it! For sure ask her if she feels comfortable picking those items up, but I can't see it being a problem. If she does say that she would be worried about the cake (based on how big it may be) then that would be something I would get delivered.

So... the flowers I wouldn’t be too worried about... the cake.. you’ll definitely want to get it delivered properly. Also depends how many layers your cake is... but I’d personally go the safer route and definitely pay the delivery fee for the cake. My cake is like 5 tiers so definitely wouldn’t be fitting into anyone’s car lol.

If they’ve offered it, don’t feel bad about taking them up on it!!

You hired the DOC to take care of things and lessen the stress on you, so I wouldn't worry about asking them to pick those things up for you. It's their job after all.
