Freezing feet and zero regrets — what actually works for winter weddings?

Anna, on April 3, 2026 at 12:16 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 1

My sister just got engaged and immediately said "December wedding" like it was nothing lol. I panicked a little honestly. We live somewhere that gets properly cold and I keep thinking about frozen guests and ruined photos. She's set on it though so now I'm the one googling at 2am. Anyone been to or planned a winter wedding that actually pulled it off beautifully? Tips, tricks, real talk welcome. I'm also having a wedding in the winter, share your esperience.

December weddings can be genuinely stunning when you lean into the season rather than fight it. The ones that feel awkward are usually the ones trying to pretend it's not winter — the ones that embrace it end up with an atmosphere you genuinely can't replicate in June.

A few things that actually made a difference at a winter wedding I attended last year: heated tent with proper flooring so guests weren't standing on frozen ground, a hot drinks station near the entrance so people had something warm in hand immediately, and a shorter gap between ceremony and reception so nobody was standing around in the cold trying to fill time.

For photos the light in December is actually incredible if you time it right — golden hour comes earlier which means you're not waiting until 7pm for good shots. The bare trees and frost can look intentional and beautiful rather than bleak if the photographer knows what they're doing with it.

The thing most people don't think about is the exit. A sparkler send-off in winter cold is genuinely magical, way more atmospheric than the same thing in summer.

Tell your sister to commit to the aesthetic fully and it'll be one of those weddings people talk about for years.
