Florist charging 10% extra for 2021

Hali Russell, on May 29, 2020 at 15:03 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 2
Hi everyone,

We made the difficult decision this week to postpone our August 2020 wedding to August 2021. We waited as long as we could and ultimately decided that with out of province guests and government gathering restrictions, we couldn’t have the wedding we had hoped.
Most of my vendors have been really great and accommodating. Several weeks ago, I checked in with my florist to secure a couple backup dates. She had responded to say “no problem, if you postpone to another 2020 date your funds will be transferred, if you postpone to 2021, you will be subject to 2021 prices”. I didn’t think too much of it.
This week, when we officially changed our date to next year, she provided a new contract to say that our total amount will increase by 10% to reflect 2021 prices.
I feel a bit dumb and blindsided. 10% is a lot of money - about an additional $900. We have a $1700 non refundable deposit. I really didn’t think it would be as much as 10%. It’s a bit unrealistic to expect people to rebook in 2020 at this point.
Has anyone else experience similar hikes in 2021 Vendor prices? How are you handling it?

Hi Hailey, now that some time has gone by have you been able to get more clarity out of your vendor? I wonder if you could renegotiate the flowers they will provide you in order to keep things in your original budget. Maybe a few swaps here and there (add some carnations to cut down on roses, add some greenery to keep centerpieces looking full with fewer blooms, etc) might be a way to absorb that 10% increase without you needing to increase the amount you'd be paying. Would they work with you on something like that?

You may want to speak to someone in the legal field and see if this is something they can do through some kid of loophole. It sounds like lots of vendors are trying this to recoup lost funds from covid, but perhaps you might find some luck with some legal insight.
