First steps to legally getting married

Maya, on August 21, 2018 at 15:28 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 8
So just looking at what the task of first steps to legally getting married are? We have got our officiant and I know we have to go get our marriage licence closer to the wedding date. Does anyone else know what this task involves?

Thanks for the suggestions. My fiancé and I aren’t religious so it’s just a basic justice of the peace ceremony.

I would check with your officiant if there is anything else they require outside of just the marriage license. They would be your best resource for what you need to do in your area.

But to my knowledge just make sure they are actually certified in your area to perform weddings, the marriage license bought within the time frame, and have it filed with the courts before it expires are the only requirements for civil ceremonies. For religious ones they usually require some form of counseling before but that is only if your getting married in the church.

Have you looked up what documents are needed? The cost that the ciry hall charges for issuing the marriage license? This is what is the next step to know. Every province may have different timelines for registering.

Ontario is 3 months before it expires and need to reapply for another marriage license. I researched all over cities near me and found the least with no tax. I even went to the government site to see what was the steps your talking about were and looked up local city halls to compare pricing and if tax was on top of that.

Do your research by looking up Alberta's time frame of marriage license and cost of one at city hall. Once you have an idea, take whats required for both of you and make the payment. Once recieved, deliver to your officiant or hold on to the paper until the day of the wedding to give the officiant personally.

I know that here in ON they need two pieces of ID from both of you. They will need to both have your name and birth date on them. SIN and health cards do not usually work.

From there, you go to the office (usually city hall), pay the fee and off you go! Smiley smile

I believe they are valid for 90 days.
