Favours: Necessary or Not?

Are wedding favours a necessary part of your reception to-do list? Or are you skipping them?

Not necessary. Ours came as a part of the venue package so that's why we have them.

Agree, not necessary. We plan to donate to a couple of charities - one of importance to each of us. I like the other thoughts and ideas floating around here too. Consider budget for yourself, and, consider your family/friends audience and how they'd interact with it. Talk it out with your partner and make a decision. Ask yourselves how will you feel about it 10 months from now? or 10 years from now?

We just bought some simple Lindor truffles and we're going to wrap them in cellophane with ribbon. The Lindt store has lots of colours to match any theme. We were able to get 300 truffles for ~$110 (100 guests; 3 per person).

I love this idea so much! I love hot chocolate so this would be a great favour I think.

Not necessary. We are going to do a donation to a charity that is important to us in lieu of favours. I love the hot chocolate idea though, so cute!

I ordered clear cellophane cone favour bags from Amazon (200 pack with twist ties), purchased the big 5 lb tins of Carnation hot chocolate mix from Costco (it went on sale, so I got it for like, $8 or $9 per tin!!). Then I got the big bags of chocolate chips from Costco as well (you can get Hershey's or Kirkland, but suggest getting the semi-sweet, not milk chocolate). And I needed mini marshmallows, so I went to Wal-Mart (Costco doesn't carry minis). I did a "demo" favour, so I knew how many grams of each 'product' I'd need, and then multiplied it by the number of favours. For example, I think we went 1/3 cup of mix, 30 grams of chips, 30 grams marshmallows. Then you just seal them up with the twist tie, and then I had blue and silver wire ribbons (my wedding colours), to tie over top. The bags were too big, so we trimmed about 2 inches off the top of all of them.

I ordered custom stickers from Vistaprint on their 50% off sale, so I got 120 stickers, w/taxes and shipping, for $28. They have 3 lines that say: "Thank You" "Brittany & Jory" "01.19.19".

When I made the favours I was expecting 100 guests, so I made 110, and gave a couple to my mom's friends who helped put the favours together. They are all ready to go now, I'm so excited.

Some tips if you want to do this: We got some poster board/sturdy card stock, and made a cone/funnel to fit perfectly into the bag, so when you pour the hot chocolate mix in, it didn't stick all down the side of the bag (looks messy). Also, we had 3 people, and did an assembly line, which got them all done in less than 2 hours. I also suggest storing them loose (not too tightly packed), and laying down... we tried storing them upright so the mix wouldn't trickle into the chips/marshmallows, and it put a lot of pressure on the tips of the bags... about 6 of the 105 broke... but they would have been totally fine if not pressing down on the tip of the bag.

Not necessary. We’re putting bags out next to our cookies so people can take some home if they want but that’s it.

Hey, out of curiosity how did you do the hot chocolate mixes? I love that idea and the price is so reasonable!

Not NECESSARY... like, your guests won't be offended.... Oh wait, they will... LOL, or some of them will anyways, some may not even notice.

You can do favours SO inexpensive (I did mine for 105 people for $150, DIY'd individual hot chocolate mixes).... so there's not really an excuse not to do them... You don't have to go overboard, and if it's gonna be something garbage, don't bother... but put a little time and effort into it, and your guests will really appreciate it!

Necessary as a thank you to your guests. But, useful things or edible things! I don’t want anything engraved with your wedding date!

Not necessary. We were so stressed about them and then my FH said: "Can we just...not do them? Is that allowed?" And we kind of laughed and decided it was a waste.

Not necessary, but we are doing them. We are giving out wildflower seeds as a way of trying to give back to the earth!

We planned on skipping it but it was very important to my mom. We are doing seed packages, the seeds were given to her by a friend with a greenhouse. She will be making the packages and her friend will design a logo.

I think they’re lovely but our coordinator is very practical and says they’re a waste of time and money...which is good bc I’m pretty sure my dress is way out of budget🤐🤷🏾‍♀️.

Definitely not necessary. We are paying for their food, entertainment and whatnot for the night so that's enough if you ask me. They will get a thank you card fo attending and gifting us (if they do). I also think personally talking to them and thanking them at the wedding is much better than something they can take home.

I don't think it's necessary because majority of couples do something silly that guests won't utilize. EVER. But if it's something edible or useful, I think it's a nice gesture (and what my fiancé and I intend to do).

Necessary! Your guests are spending money to come to your wedding, the least you can do is send them home with a memento!

Not necessary - I'd rather give my guests a drink ticket, than a trinket they'll probably forget or leave behind.

We were given a plant, at one wedding, and had to leave it there since we couldn't bring it with us on our flight back.

I don’t think they’re necessary but my mom and FH think that they are, so reluctantly, we are doing favours.
