Engagement Ring Insurance

Christine, on November 3, 2017 at 07:41 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 13

I have been reading about the need to insure my ring. Has anyone else done that? How did you go about doing it and was it costly? I know that it would be worth it if something happens to my ring, but not sure of the process.

Any insurance companies in Ontario that are recommended? We are renting so we have renters insurance but not sure if it would cover my ring.

Thanks, Christine

The easiest thing is to go through current home insurance (if you have it).

Yes it was super easy! Ours was just added on to our current insurance, it didn't change the price. All they needed were the appraisal forms and we were good!

I'm pretty sure that we added it to our renters insurance but I'm not absolutely positive. Definitely something we should look into as well if we haven't done it yet.

We already had our car and renters insurance through Belair so we just added it onto the renters policy. We emailed them the appraisal, and it increased our yearly premium by just over $50 I think. Definitely worth it!

Hi Christine. I work for an insurance broker and yes you most absolutely should insure. If you have a tenants/contents policy already you should just be able to add your ring to that policy by way of an endorsement. You don't need an actual seperate policy. Provide your broker with the appraisal certificate and they can tell you how much more it will cost per year. I added my ring right away because I knew I didn't have that kind of money in the bank to replace it if something happened!

My fiancé insured it the day he bought it.

We added it to our renters insurance for the appraised price. I highly recommend insuring it!

I will be insuring mine, though I haven't yet.

A friend of mine had hers insured and has needed it. She put it in her pocket one day when her hands were swollen. It fell out (probably while she was getting gas somewhere along her road trip) and she lost it. Insurance is 100% covering the cost of re-making the same ring (it was a custom ring). It is even working out so that she gets a bigger diamond in the new one than she had in the original one.

I have mine insured through Jewelers Mutual. The process was really easy and online. I just submitted my appraisal and paid my premium. Their coverage is pretty comprehensive as well.

We added mine to our renters insurance. We got the ring appraised, then sent the appraisal letter to the insurer. Depending on the appraisal value, the insurance company will add a rider on your current policy that will have a cost/month added to your current insurance cost.

I would definitely insure your ring. I would contact your insurance company to see if you could possibly add it to your policy in some way. You should have gotten an insurance document from the jeweler (if not you can always go ask for one) and I think you just submit that to the insurance company so that they know the value.
