Eloping to Ireland

Shaelyn, on April 12, 2020 at 13:20 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 5
My fiance and I are considering eloping to Northern Ireland when this is all over. Curious to hear about your elopement experiences! Any tips? Budgets? Any help would be appreciated...

Eloping out of Canada would be harder due to the amount of paperwork to fill out and marriage license to acquire. These important things need time, costs and travelling plans to consider when thinking about destination weddings. Waiting until all this done and going forward to elope locally may seem easier and in an area that is suitable you both like to have witnesses with you. It does cut down the cost too given what you would be paying to go to Ireland.
Celebrating your marriage with family and friends later on may be suggestable as my in laws did the same by going to Nova Scotia with parents. This was done by my in laws as they went to Nova Scotia to have a vacation at the same time.

Yikes! I can see why you decided against it.

I think they recommend 5 business days before, so a 10 day trip would have been potentially eaten up by waiting in government offices for paperwork.

Thanks for sharing, Amelia! It's great that you were able to plan a small wedding here for a good price!
My fiance's mother is from Belfast, and as such he has a lot of family there. We don't mind spending some extra time with them while we wait for the marriage certificate. How many days was the wait?

We looked into eloping in Ireland! There is a company that takes care of a lot of the details (photographer, private locations, witnesses, officiant, and even flowers).

My fiance didn't love that you need to arrive days before the wedding to get a marriage certificate. He felt that we would spend most of our trip being stressed out about wedding things instead of enjoying Ireland. Once we crunched the numbers we realized we could have a small wedding at home with a far smaller price tag and be able to include the people we love.
Some days I wish we were still eloping, but in the present circumstances I'm really glad that a destination wedding isn't up in the air with corona virus. It definitely shows that things can go wrong (or right) no matter where you choose to get married!
