Dress Alterations

Joanna, on November 25, 2020 at 09:26 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 8
Hello fellow brides!
I got the call yesterday that my dress came in (woo!) but, since I am in Toronto, it’s locked down in the store until we move back into the Red Zone. I am surprised it’s here already because I was told it would likely arrive in March due to shipping delays. We are getting married May 1, 2021.

My bridal consultant encouraged me to get alterations elsewhere as their shop’s in-house pricing is high.
I have several thoughts that I’d love to get your input on!
I know my dress will need cups and to be taken in at the waist. It will not require hemming (bonus to being tall I suppose!)
1. Do most brides go with the in-house person?2. If not, do you have any suggestions (Toronto)?3. What is/would be your preference?4. What undergarments are you wearing (spanx, skims, comfortable or lingerie)? (Personal Q, lol sorry, please don’t answer if uncomfortable!)
I’m a bit nervous my dress will get locked down again in a shop but I’ll have to cross that bridge when I get there.
Any insight would be incredibly helpful! ❤️

My dress right now only needs to get the straps shortened. Luckily I'm tall and won't need to get it hemmed. I will being wearing Spanx to help smooth everything out. I'm not sure if I will need a bra once the straps are fixed. I hope not since the dress has super thin straps that you could never hide a bra strap in and it comes down fairly low so I'm not sure I'll be able to find a strapless bra with enough of a plunge.

True, you probably do want to look it over with them to make sure there are no issues even if they're not altering it.

Thank you for this information Hank!
I missed the call so was left a voicemail but she referenced “inspecting the dress” which is why they are probably waiting until after.

FYI, since you're not doing alterations in-house, you don't need to try on the dress for them in the store and can technically take the dress home if they're willing to have someone go into the store and hand it to you curbside. That's not against the rules under our lockdown.

I never considered seamstresses being unavailable or too busy so that’s a very good point. Starting the process earlier is the way to go!

I did my alterations early because of the seamstresses availability and that worked in my favor! I did those in Jan/Feb for our October wedding, tried on again in late August and had some minor last minute tweaks done. (I stopped drinking during lockdown and my chest shrunk!) There was no option for in house alterations, but I likely would have shopped closer to home as my salon is about an hour away vs 15 minutes which came in handy as I had a few fittings due to the amount of work done.

I went braless and wore a nude seamless thong. I used dress tape to keep the bust in place.
I'm short so hemming was a must!

I will check out those suggestions for sure! My consultant basically said their shop charges double... which is why I am seeking alternatives, or at least get an idea of pricing before deciding!

    Thank you so much Kaitlyn!

So I went a little crazy and purchased 2 dresses....I plan on wearing both day of.

Dress 1 the store does the alterations in house so I will get them done there.

Dress 2 the store provided me with a list of seamstresses they recommend as they do not do alterations in house. (there are 2 Toronto alteration shops on the list...1. Shoppe and Tailor on Ossington Ave. and 2. The Village Seamstress on Bellamy Rd.) I did not contact either of these shops as I am in St. Catharines and will be using the one they recommended closest to me.

I don't really have a preference, I like the convenience of in-house but also feel comfortable with going to a seamstress that the bridal store recommends.

I have NO idea what I am wearing for undergarments, I would like something that works under both dresses if possible, they have a similar silhouette - probably spanx of some sort and for sure will be getting supportive cups sewn into both gowns.
