Does my makeup look professional?

Alexis, on June 23, 2021 at 09:36 Posted in Beauty 0 20
I spent $200 to have my wedding makeup done by a professional makeup company in town that has good reviews and was recommended by a wedding show I trusted maybe a little too much. I just had my makeup trial. (Super awesome but it’s legal for people in certain categories to be open for makeup).

I was going for a glowy look with pink powders. I didn’t want any eyeliner (I said minimal would be fine). I took the photos 10 min after the trial..
I’ll show you my regular makeup I do myself in the comments.
I’ve decided I will do my own makeup. The $200 won’t be refunded because the makeup because the company said was exactly how professional makeup is supposed to look.
But I have a dilemma, should I be reviewing the company? I want people to be warned but also I don’t want to wreck this persons business.. Does my makeup look professional? 1Does my makeup look professional? 2

Hey Alexis, I think you should definitely leave a review! The makeup they did really doesn't look anywhere near the quality of the pictures they posted. And I personally think you look absolutely stunning in the picture where you did your own! I'm sorry they aren't refunding the $200 though when clearly their quality isn't what they advertised it to be Smiley sad

Yeah it’s really tricky. I worked in the makeup/skincare industry for years and the skill level of different artists is all over the place. Sometimes you’ll find a good artist too but something just doesn’t mean between them and the client and styles don’t match up. I’ve personally never had my makeup done by someone else where I liked it, including by people who do wedding makeup professionally and whose work I generally think is good. If you’re comfortable doing your own makeup I think it’s a really good option as long as you do a few test runs and test everything with flash to make sure it looks good on camera. YouTube tutorials are your friend haha! Good luck! 😊

I feel awful you spent $200 for a professional makeup application that looks nothing close to a professional's work. It's the eyeliner for me. The inspiration looks you showed have more of a soft glam appearance than the work they did which looks more soft and subtle.

I would definitely write a review. It's important for future customers to know the truth. Of course it is in no means to harm the business. If I were the owner or makeup artist and makeup was my passion, this feedback would be invaluable as I'd want to invest more practice into perfecting my craft which will enlist more business in the future! Everyone has to start somewhere Smiley smile

However, if the makeup artist did not meet my expectations (or create a similar look that's more suited to my features), I would not book for my wedding. Thank goodness for trials!

Before booking my makeup artist, I looked up a bunch of MUA on instagram to check out their work & also googled reviews or looked them up on wedding wire.

What's important is that you feel confident and comfortable in your own skin on your wedding day!

Lol right?!! I consider myself pretty inexperienced at makeup especially after like a year and a half of staying home.
Can you imagine that happening on the wedding day 🤣 I didn’t think I’d have a trial before the day either!!

Thank you 😊 I would be but it would have been the day of the wedding. It was more like the eyebrows being different lengths and the winged liner on one side and the other side being another angle that bothered me more than the blotchy makeup. The photos from Pinterest are definitely edited, it’s the style I was going for more so. But ya lol I definitely expected airbrush to stay on my skin when I was in the at and look better. (I have moisturized not at all dry or oily skin so it’s suppose to stick good) The people at the business all went to school to learn how to do makeup 🙈 but also I have no idea how much school that was for them. I think you are absolutely right it’s all over the place with makeup being good or bad unfortunately 🙈

Thank you 😊 I’m glad to see that I’m not way off in my opinion of it. She would be but it would be on the day of the wedding and tbh I just trust that I’ll be able to do things more evenly

I agree with the others that the makeup you did on yourself looks more professional than that! I would for sure leave a review if I were you. That is no good! I'm sorry this happened to you! It's not even that the makeup looks "ugly" or anything like that, it just definitely does not look professional. Sucks you had to lose $200 on that! Would she try again?

The unfortunate thing is that anybody can say they're a professional makeup artist. You don't need to have a certificate or any education. I know many artists who are self taught who are phenomenal. I also know artists who have gone to school for makeup artistry and they're only just okay. So professional makeup can technically look like anything and at the end of the day some people are going to be good at it and others aren't.

It looks like you maybe got someone who was on the not so good end of things. I'm sorry about that and that you can't be refunded. I would definitely write a review in your position along with photos so other people can see the quality of work.

But I also think it's important people have realistic expectations of what makeup will look like on them vs on models in photos. For example, I don't see anything obviously wrong with how the artist did your skin, although it could be that the photos aren't showing everything since wedding wire tends to obliterate any photo quality lol. To me it looks similar to the photo you posted of how you do your own makeup, but you were the one actually wearing it and saw it in real life so you know whether it was done well or not. The model in the photo also has a very different eye and eyebrow shape than you so it's going to look different. That being said she very clearly gave you super heavy eyeliner when that wasn't something in the photo or something you asked for and it looks like she put gold shadow on you instead of a more rosy colour? She also did your eyebrows a different shape than you do when you do your own makeup. Is she willing to do another trial after getting your feedback since you're unhappy with it?

    Hello Alexis,
Sorry that you had to go through that for $200 with a makeup company that cannot do makeup correctly and how you want it. I personally feel that you should definitely write a review to warn others. That’s just not cool for them to charge you that much and not even refund you some. They did not give you a trial option before even charging you that amount?

Your makeup looks way better than what they tried to do.
I have a cousin-in-law that does makeup and I’m going to be doing some trial runs with her. I showed her what I am going for. Also, if anything I can do it myself as well, as I’m not big on make up, I do foundation, mascara, eyeliner and highlights.
You have sisters or female around that can confirm all is well on the day of or even run a few more trial options for your day?

I do agree with you that your own makeup looks nicer than the professional. I don't even feel like it's close to what you were hoping for. I don't use makeup often but I think even I would do a better job at it. I'm sorry you were disappointed but luckily it was a trial.

Personally I think the makeup artist could have done a way better job in my opinion. The way you did your makeup looks a lot better then what she has done
