Dj vs. live music -- and would you hire a student musician?

Denise, on March 24, 2017 at 09:45 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 6

Hey ladies!

I wanted to have both live musicians (for the cocktail hour + first dance + dinner) and then a DJ to get things going with Top 40 hits and traditional (Turkish) music afterwards.

What's the best way to fuse the two together?

On another note -- would you hire a student musician?

I'm considering it because pro musicians cost a lot! They require more $ for the performance and additional $ for sound production on the day of, which really adds $$$$ to the bill.

We are doing a live musician (harpist) for the ceremony and then a DJ for the cocktail hour and reception. Ours should be easy to coordinate since the harp will be outside and the DJ will be inside but if they were both inside you would just need to plan a small break (like 10-15 mins) where one finishes and the other starts. If your DJ is experienced you could ask their advice or opinion as they might have done it before! Or would certainly have more of an idea of how it would need to work.

I would definitely hire a student musician, but I would definitely listen to them play before booking. I think having a live musician during cocktail hour is so nice, i went to a wedding where they did that and it was awesome. Having a DJ is great too though especially for dancing Smiley smile

We are having a 3 piece band play for our ceremony (all strings) and then having our DJ put on relaxing music for the cocktail hour and then the DJ from after dinner until 1am.

I would definitely go with student musicians! I've hired them for various events and they're always dependable and professional.

I absolutely would hire a student musicians... Of course listen to them first... I would also probably have a backup plan and only be willing to pay a small deposit.
