dj versus playlist?

Jessica, on June 10, 2018 at 14:28 Posted in Wedding reception 0 12
Hey wives/brides-to-be,

I’m wrestling with the battle of hiring a DJ or making a playlist on my ipod/phone and playing that for the dance. I need opinions. We are trying to do the wedding as less expensive as possible and I feel like hiring a DJ is a huge expense I would rather put towards something else. Please help!

thanks in advance,

Jessica

I was planning on just making playlists (my best friend did that and her wedding went wonderfully) but I’ve realized the rental price of speakers is only a small amount less than the DJ fee - and the DJ would know how to set everything up Smiley winking hahaha

Dj does play what you desire genre wise and keeps the guests on the dance floor.

Playlist does allow limited space and how its being played through (usb, laptop, cd player) etc. Some guests may want to have a song requested which can take time to download and add to your playlist. One family member may end up doing that all evening instead of dancing away the whole time.

DJ! When we did our budget we picked three things we won’t cheap out on, the venue, the music, the photographer.

Although i havent gotten married yet, ive loved how easy Apple Music makes it to make playlists. And i got a 3 month trial so i can cancel it after the wedding and not have to pay anything

We did our own music for our wedding and it was great! Super fun experience in the planning stage and it was a lot cheaper than having a DJ. We had a friend MC the reception and when it was time for dances he just hit play on the appropriate playlist. Once the dancing really got going it was super easy to just hit play and let it ride!

Spend the money on a dj. but don't be afraid to meet a few of them and get a good vibe from them. or get recommendations from people/read their reviews.
a good dj will feel the vibe of the crowd and keep them going.

for your guests. the only thing they remember from a wedding is the music and the food. both should be great!

We've been to sooo many wedding that have had terrible DJs that we decided this wasn't something we were prepared to pay $1000 for. We've booked a friend's band to play for part of the night and will be supplementing that with playlists when they're not playing (cocktail hour, end of the night, breaks etc.)

We booked a DJ for several reasons, one being that they will also act as an "MC" who can make announcements to our guests regarding what's happening in the evening, first dance, etc. They are also our lighting technician, so we will have spotlights at appropriate times, uplighting, and table spotlights.

We've been to a wedding where they went with the laptop for music and the only thing I didn't like was that as the night went on, the guests got tired of controlling the music themselves.

We are skipping the DJ. We are doing a playlist on Spotify and having people take turns watching the music. My fiance is downloading a program that will fade one song out and the next one in. We are renting a sound system with a soundboard from our venue.

The downside is we are needing guests to help out, we have to find our own music, we don't necessarily know the best songs people will dance to.

We also went with a DJ, it just seems like a lot to do on our own at the wedding. I also want to be spending my wedding with the people I invite dancing versus spending time playing music or asking a family memeber or friend to do it. If it is something you want to do I would look at DJs that allow you to rent their equipment and some even rent out iPods with playlists and what not. I think our DJ had that kind of package and I think it was 300-400 dollars.

We’re doing a DJ because for us the dancing and partying with our guests is something that was really important to me. So shelling out $800-900 is totally worth it for me. I have been to a wedding where the venue was equipt with speakers so they just used a phone to do the music. Just make sure you download the tracks, don’t stream them. They had an issue where their first dance song got cut in half and jumped a bunch. They laughed it off but I personally wouldn’t be okay with that and I know a lot of people wouldn’t.

We considered doing our own music. But went with a DJ instead. Just remember if you are doing it yourself you will also need to get some equipment. You will need some good speakers, just a set of computer speakers will not do. After researching it we figured it would cost us between $200-$300 just to rent good speakers to use. Plus we would be responsible for setting it up and taking everything down when the wedding is over. You don’t want to leave audio equipment somewhere overnight where it could grow legs and walk away, it would be expensive to pay to replace good speakers.

You will also need to create several playlists for times like cocktail hour, dinner and then dancing.

It can be done but it’s a lot of work to do it right. We ended up going with a DJ that is going to cost us around $800 and will take care of the music for our ceremony and reception. That way it’s one last thing we neeed to worry about.
