dj or diy Music

Jessica, on March 27, 2019 at 12:13 Posted in Wedding reception 0 11
My FH and myself are split on whether or not to hire a DJ. He thinks it's too much money and I think it would be worth it to have someone else do the work. Has anyone done their own music for the reception? Any suggestions or ideas would be great!

Definitely DJ, especially if you plan to have a good and memorable reception. If you only have a small wedding, less than 30 guests then you could probably do it yourself but any more than that definitely DJ. We almost did DIY but I knew we'd regret it.

I was set on not having a DJ because our wedding is small (60 people) and everything is so expensive where we are getting married. 2 months before the wedding and the thing keeping me up at night was the aspect of who is going to play the music? Will the speaker I have be loud enough? What type of music will everyone else want to hear and dance too? If the music sounds bad, I can’t fix it. If people don’t like what we chose, there was nothing we could do about it, and did I really want to inconvenience anyone on our wedding? luckily I’m getting married On a Thursday and we found a DJ right away! That stress is now completely gone! When we were going to have our wedding locally, we had a DJ. I don’t know why we entertained the idea of doing it ourselves. Lol. To me it’s worth it to spend the money

I vote DJ just because it's easier and let's you two focus on your wedding rather than who is in charge of the music.

I think it depends on the crowd you have as well. We don't have much of a dancing crowd so we'll most likely diy but it does seem like way less stress to hire a dj.

We did our own music. We created a list on Spotify and had four people take turns ensuring it was running smoothly. It worked well for us, but we didn’t have a huge dancing crowd.

We had to rent the speakers and soundboard from our venue. And finding music was a pain!

I agree with the general consensus so far, the DJ is worth it! We have friends who are getting married 2 months after us and they tried to do their own music and everything but eventually cracked and got a DJ because they said it was too much added stress. We like that the DJs typically know how to get the crowd up and dancing and keep them dancing. We were worried that if we did our own music and a song came on that people weren't really into and we were too busy to change it that the whole mood would die.

You can always do your own music for the ceremony and then over dinner and only have a DJ after dinner to help cut costs down. Most Djs we looked at had a 4 hour package and then charged hourly after that.

I would definitely look past the sticker shock and get a DJ! Not only do they provide the music, but they know how to keep the flow within different genres and keep people entertained. Many have their own equipment which is handy if the venue doesn't have it. You're getting so much more with a DJ than a DIY playlist. Like you said, someone will end up having to be in charge of the music that night, and you'd probably not want to go that on your own wedding.

Lots also provide MC services, if you don't have someone in mind for this, it's a plus.

A DJ is so worth the money! Like Kelsie said, they will set the mood, keep everyone going, they basically have every song ever made, so if you have a guest that really wants something played, chances are the DJ has it.

I did the play list for my brother in law when he did 30 (his birthday was at a hall) and there were literally 2000 songs with every genre for everyone, we ended up just pulling up youtube and playing requests because of the random mix of music.

Its one of those things that people remember from a wedding, I would for sure try to find it in the budget to get a DJ. Look into some smaller companies, maybe even some students who are just starting out.

That's exactly what I'm thinking, but my FH can't see past the price. I know if we do our own music, I'll be stuck with the task, lol. Thank you!

I recommend 10000% getting a DJ. They do more than just play music. They set the mood, and hopefully keep the mood, for the entire evening.

Some DJs, like ours, also serve as the MC for the evening.

    its worth it.
