Cupcakes? cake? both?

Katherine, on January 9, 2017 at 00:45 Posted in Wedding reception 0 15

Hello Fellow Brides,

I'm not sure what is better financially and what will please more people? I possibly like the idea of getting a smaller cake with cupcakes but I'm not sure.

Just thought I'd put this out there and get some advice.

Thanks!

I am planning on doing a small cake for my fiancee and I to cut at the reception then take home to our hotel afterwards, and then we are going to have a dessert buffet, cupcakes will be one of the options put out for people to enjoy, in the same flavors of our cake of course.

This is exactly what we are doing. A small enough cake so we can have the bridal party eat that and then cupcakes.

I am planning on a small cake for cutting and then freezing for anniversary purposes and then cupcakes where I am hoping this way we can include the gluten free option for the family members with this concern. That is what I hope will happen anyway. Smiley atonished

That's what I was going to recommend. We did a 2 tier display cake (for the cutting) and then had sheet cake that they cut in the back. Tastes the same, is easier to serve and is less expensive! I think it was like $3-4 cheaper per serving.

If you like cupcakes though, that's also a fun route! And you could get more flavours that way. (My only concern with cupcakes is if they would dry out from sitting out too long since they're not completely covered in frosting or fondant to hold in the moisture.) Just depends on what works best for the both of you!

We have a 6" cutting cake just for traditions sake and then a tower of cupcakes ... just because I love cupcakes over cake lol

A small cake to save for our anniversary and cupcakes for guests and cake pops for the kids. Can't wait for the tasting. Smiley tongue

We are having either a 6 or 8" cake for us to have and then we are getting about 100 cupcakes for the guests to enjoy! The best part about this is we can do up to 3 different flavours of cupcakes to that the guests have a variety of flavours to choose from! Smiley smile

If you're looking for inexpensive cake you can always get your cake from like Costco or a grocery bakery and have it cut in the back, no one will never know the difference. And then you can have a single or 2 tier cake out for display/cutting for pictures

I think a big cost factor would be if your venue charges a cake cutting fee, some venues charge $1.00- $2.00 per slice!!! So then cupcakes are usually cheaper. Otherwise I think the cost is about the same so it's all up to preference. I make a mess trying to eat a cupcake and I wouldn't want to mess up my makeup or dress, so cake all the way for me!!!

Hi Katherine! Nice to meet you! I'm so glad you're joining our community! Smiley heart It's so hard to choose one or the other! I personally love if you can go for both! You can take a look at other discussions on the subject:

What frosting will you choose for your wedding cake?

What flavours do you have in mind? Smiley smile

We're having a small cake with cupcakes. I personally think it's easier for guests to just grab a cupcake if they want one then having someone cut all the cake.

Only problem with that is the place I'm doing the reception doesn't allow home baked goods.

I was just going to ask my family to make a cake. Cheaper that way then getting a bakery to do it. And we will also have cupcakes too. People like options
