"cultural fusion" weddings

Robyn, on November 7, 2018 at 15:17 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 16

My fiance is Lebanese, so we'll be having pre-wedding parties at both of our houses on the day of the ceremony, zaffe dancers, drummers, and a sword to cut the cake. To honour my Ukrainian heritage, I'm having a korovai bread cake (in addition to a traditional wedding cake) and rushnyk cloth for us to step on after we're pronounced husband and wife. And for both cultures: lots and lots of dancing (and toasting... omg so many toasts).

Curious to know about everyone else's ideas for combining two cultures into a single celebration. And I love to hear about different wedding traditions in general so please share!

Most of the Officiants can't interfere with some traditions of the cultures and have to bypass them. If they are caught doing that, they may lose their license to wed couples.

My fiances background is Indian! Qe are doing a mix of Indian and Western foods for our buffet so everyone can try everything! Also I'm considering g wearing a sari at the reception when my wedding dress becomes too much to wear! I just want to make sure it's okay for me to wear I would hate to be offensive in any way!

Thank you!!! It took FOREVER to find lmao, I actually started looking before we were officially engaged. I had some strict requirements: had to be silver, had to have flowers, not just leaves, and no pearls at all. Almost all the floral tiaras I found were gold for some reason, and when I contacted the sellers they said for one reason or another they couldn't change it to silver.

This one is from TopGracia if you wanted to take a look at their other pieces Smiley smile

We met in the middle for my wedding as well, I'll be wearing a floral headband (which works out because a headband is a staple piece of who I am)

HELLO TO YOU, MY UKRAINIAN FRIEND!! Lol it's good to digitally meet you. Ukrainian food at midnight is such a good idea I might have to borrow it!!!!! Me and my FH have an ongoing debate over whose culture makes the best cabbage rolls (in Lebanon they make them without tomato sauce?!) ... maybe I'll have platters of each and see which ones run out first Smiley xd

Question for you: are you wearing a flower crown? That was my mom's biggest request. I compromised with a silver floral tiara.

HELLO FELLOW UKRAINIAN!! lol I will be fusing my Ukrainian background with my FH's Icelandic background. We were thinking that for the social and wedding we would have the late night snack be a spread of Ukrainian food but for his side we haven't come up with anything really... To be fair - that's on him. I grew up Ukrainian!

    I love all of this.

I'm actually not Lebanese but I am in LOVE with the notion of Zaffe dancers bringing in the bride and groom... it's so energetic and it hypes up the crowd, there is no better way IMO to make an entrance.

My wedding will probably be the biggest mixing pot our venue has seen (lol) my family is Canadian, my father's side is Colombian (he's passed so he won't be there) while his family is Trinidadian and Jamaican... but he grew up here (in little italy,) so all of his friends and their families are Italian and Portuguese. A good majority of my friends are Afghan and Portuguese, and most of my work colleagues are Somali.

Some of the venues we have visited have asked if we have any cultural preferences, and at this point we just laugh.

Our wedding was fusion as well having 2 of 3 traditions happen for the wedding. Indian outfits worn and the stepping stones vows was a no go as the officiant could have his license taken away. We did however have the garlands put on each other and parents' blessings.
