covid - to cancel/postpone or continue as planned

Kristan, on March 21, 2020 at 08:11 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 11
Looking for advice.

Our destination wedding is scheduled for May 27th and we’re traveling to Jamaica on May 23rd with 60 of our guests.
No idea what the COVID situation will look like by then but hoping that at least the spread will have slowed down.
We have spoken with our wedding planner and they’ve allowed us to hold off on payment until we know what the situation will be like and also will allow us to postpone if need be.
What are all of you basing your decisions on? When have you made the decisions to cancel or postpone your wedding?
Thanks for sharing in this unpredictable time

We have cancelled our travel and postponed the wedding. No dates decided on yet as there is still so much uncertainty. That is for sharing your thoughts.

We are supposed to be getting married May 16 in Ontario.

So far, our venue has closed until early April, and our venue is attempting to secure dates for the March and April brides before worrying about May brides. So far... things are on track, however, obviously if this pandemic continues, we want to be able to make a decision before our final payment is due for our florist (1 month prior to the wedding date). So far, our vendors have been INCREDIBLE. Most of them reached out to us to see if we were doing okay and to confirm dates for rebookings if there have been any changes. We are going to keep staying positive throughout this whole thing.

Travel agencies are down majorly due to the borders closed and half the world cancellations of the trips planned. Weddings for this time of year are really suffering big time with its venue closing down its business and dates being postponed with many couples at this time without penalty on the good note. Destination weddings are understanding and doing the same to give the couple and their guests a time to deal with the agency and not penalize them too. Until this is all clear, postpone the date and keep positive.

We reached out to the travel agent today. They said based on current policies we don’t fit into the category that can change their dates without penalties at this time. She advised that she would reach out to us before we and our guests have to make final payments to shed light on what the policies will be at that time (mid April). She said things are changing on a daily basis. We also found out that our resort is forcing guests out by March 31st and will be closed until May 1st. I guess it’s just a waiting game! We are all in the same boat!

We are in the same boat. Our destination wedding in Mexico is May 15 and although we haven’t be notified of any flight cancellations, my sister in law who works for the airline told me that the flights will most likely be cancelled... so we have planned to move our wedding until January next year if we’re allowed to postpone that long. We are just waiting to hear from our travel agent to confirm that our flights will be cancelled but they probably won’t know officially until next month. I think you’re right into thinking on it for a few more weeks. Things may have settled down by then but it’s best to plan ahead just in case. I hope this helps your decision and fingers crossed you still get your destination wedding!

You still have some time left to decide. If I were you, I would make a decision in april. It's important to give enough notice to your guests. Keep an eye out for upcoming news. Anything can change. My wedding is end of June and um deciding in April what to do.

I know it’s crazy!! This week was a turning point for me when people worked from home and the downtown core was a ghost town!

I’ve halted on all planning right now - you just can’t be sure when things are going to get better Smiley sad

    Hi Kelsie!

We haven’t received notification yet. We’ve reached out to the travel agent to get more info on the resort and changing dates etc.
We figure if we wait another 4 weeks we should have a better idea of what things will look like. Then we will decide if it’s safe for all of our guests. We have lots of kids coming. Ours included and our parents and family friends who are all at high risk.
Things have changed very quickly. I feel like it was only just two weeks ago we were still trying to order wedding favors and discuss seating chart etc and now we’re in a totally different position. Such a strange feeling

Our bridal shower is May 3 and we’re giving ourselves until mid April to decide whether that’s going ahead.

For the wedding July 18, we’re going to decide by June if we cancel or not. Fingers crossed by June this has settled down.
Is your resort open? I just got notified last night that Sandals and Beaches resorts are closed until May 15.
If you’re cancelling/postponing try to give yourself some time - so you can notify all your guests.
I’m so sorry you have to even contemplate this decision. I hope things get better over the next few weeks.
