Covid-19 Wedding Planning Challenges

Fabiola, on August 11, 2020 at 00:20 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 14

I had originally had the date of June 20, 2020, in mind as my wedding day, but as things progressed with the planning of our wedding, COVID-19 hit and everything came to a halt. Luckily I had returned my dress and veil and other accessories prior to the pandemic hitting and hadn't put any deposits on anything, thankfully, because then my fiance's divorce application was also put on hold because the judges were not working during the lockdown so things have been dragging. He finally received his Order of Divorce in the mail but now we need his Divorce Certificate in order to apply for a Marriage Licence, which can only be requested by mail because the court offices are not open to the public, and will take approximately two weeks to process apparently, which I find difficult to believe because Canada Post is moving so slowly that it will probably only get there two weeks from now. Once we receive the Divorce Certificate, only one of us will be able to go to City Hall to apply for the Marriage Licence and we will not be able to have a Civil Wedding because City Hall is closed to the public. I am feeling so defeated by these current times and that this wedding is never going to happen. Who else is feeling defeated by COVID-19 with respect to their wedding planning?

I live in Ontario. I've never heard of London Drugs. It looks like there are stores only in Western Canada. Thanks anyhow, though. Smiley smile

Also, you can get marriage licenses at London Drugs. I went yesterday with my fiancé and it took 10 min to receive one. You just need ID!

One place got back to me to let me know that they could book me in for September 2020 so things are looking up... Yay!!
Thank you for the alternative suggestions, though, in case this lead falls through. Smiley winking

    Best regards,

I don't think you can book a park as I believe most of the GTA is still not allowing any event bookings on public spaces, which includes parks, civic squares, and beaches. But you can try a private business like golf courses or cottages. Maybe a rooftop patio during non-busy hours like morning.

    Hi Hank,

Thank you so much for your reply and for your suggestion.
We had the same idea, as I'm currently looking into possibly booking the gazebo at a nearby park along with the services of an officiant.

So kind of you to make the suggestion!!! Smiley heart

    Thank you!!! Smiley smile

Hey Fabiola, though you can't book City Hall or a civic centre, you can always book an officiant and have them conduct a wedding on private property. You can find one in your area at https://data.ontario.ca/dataset/registered-marriage-officiants. For a secular wedding, you can book using one of the Humanist Association of Canada officiants.

    Good luck!

    Hi Vinod,

Thank you so much for your reply and for lending an ear. I was having such a miserable day yesterday that I just needed to vent, so thanks for listening and for providing that vision of positivity that I need.

I realize we're not the only couple that got hit by COVID-19 but I guess it was one obstacle after another that was beginning to make me feel like things were beginning to get unsurmountable. My fiance' did assure me that he mailed the Divorce Certificate application yesterday so the wheels on obtaining that are in motion.

I have been having some challenges finding my dream dress, as the one I love is out of my budget and haven't had an opportunity to even try it on yet because of the lockdown. I hope that I will be able to schedule an appointment to try it on soon and hopefully squeeze it into my budget somehow if I like the way it looks on me. Thanks again for listening and for your support during this period of fragility that I'm feeling. Smiley heart

Times hit hard though nothing is impossible to achieve. City hall along with everything was the hardest for other couples to get marriage licenses too. Now that appointments for City Hall is available and pick up arrangement can be made would be a great thing to ask.

Its great that all the documents are being taken care of and you two can proceed with your wedding soon. The light at the end of the tunnel is there, yet we have to get there to see it.

As for your dress, I do hope you get what your dream look and accessories in time.
