Continue planning or pause?

Sarah, on June 14, 2020 at 09:41 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 33
Hello! We’re getting married in January 2021 (hopefully!) ... due to COVID-19, I’m not sure if we should keep planning and booking vendors or if we should wait a bit to see if we will even be able to have the wedding. We’ve already booked our venue (including catering), photographer, videographer, DJ & I already have my dress and a lot of decor. The next step was to book the florist & go bridesmaid dress shopping but that all got put on hold when places started shutting down due to COVID-19 in March. As things are reopening now, I want to pick up where we left off but I’m not sure if there’s any point... I’m afraid we will have to postpone our January wedding if the restrictions aren’t lifted or if there’s a 2nd wave. Also, when should I contact my current vendors to see what my options are? I know right now they are probably swamped dealing with weddings that are closer..
Thanks so much in advance 💕

I personally would wait a bit till things open more. you dont want to sign more contracts and pay more deposits if theres a second wave in the fall. i would wait till sept and then start up again. see how those numbers are

I think there are still come things you can continue to plan. Like mentioned before you can get bridesmaid dresses online easily. Two of my bridesmaids do not live where I live so it was better for us to shop online. My biggest thing was the right colour - I wanted them to wear gold but the the true gold was very hard to find. But I found this site which has a ton of options - https://showmeyourmumu.com/?view=bridal - and they all got their dresses from there in the colour I wanted - just different styles. As long as you know what you are looking for that should be an easy thing to coordinate and even if the wedding is postponed they will still have their dresses.

Same thing with the florist - there is no harm in looking around. I would honestly plan like you are going forward in January but prepare for having to postpone. That way you will have everything booked but can move the date if needed. You just don't want to be scrambling in the event everything goes forward as planned. Check with all your vendors about postponing. Most are flexible in light of the circumstances.

I would also suggest doing electronic invitations if you can/want. That way you can start designing but you don't have to commit and print anything and can always change the date if you need to at a later date. Plus you can gather emails in the meantime so you can be prepared to send whenever you need to.

Hope this helps and we are all praying this blows over by 2021!

Hi Sarah, our wedding was in May 2020, we postponed it to August 2020. It’s a small wedding to begin with, less than 50 people. The only thing I would suggest is to try to push as much as possible all the deposits that your vendors are asking. Cause most of them you will lose if you have to cancel or if they close their business. As for the new vendors, try to make as little deposit as possible.
Wish you all the best with you planning and let’s stay positive, it will happen!! 😃

Hi Patricia 😊 thanks for your reply! Oh wow! I didn’t see anything about that yet but that’s really positive news! I think I’ll wait a bit before inquiring & I will continue to plan but I’ll just pay closer attention to postponement/cancellation policies. QC has increased the maximum people to 50 so I feel more hopeful! I know things can change if there’s a 2nd wave but for now we’ll keep our fingers crossed!

Hello Jenica 😊 thanks for your input! Yes, I know January is still kinda far out and that’s why I don’t really want to reach out to our venue/vendors YET but I just wasn’t sure if I should keep planning when really, we have no idea if it will happen or be postponed. But I think I will continue planning now & just pay more attention to postponement/cancellation policies with the new vendors we book! I feel so much more hopeful today since QC has increased the limit to 50 people now. For sure it can change if there’s a 2nd wave but for now I think we should continue planning & deal with it if there is a 2nd wave and the restrictions change.

Hi Alana 😊. OMG that’s awful 😪 I’m so sorry you’re dealing with that!! That’s so not right. There must be some kind of law to protect people from this?!? I know you signed a contract but if they’re unable to hold up to their side due to government restrictions then I think you should definitely be in the right.. Keep fighting! I’m sure you’re not alone. Truly sorry that you & your fiancé have to deal with this 😪😪😪 Hope everything works out in the end💗

Hi Jennifer 😊 thanks for your input! I agree, I think we will keep planning and just be more alert concerning postponement/cancellation policies for new vendors. I feel so much more hopeful today since QC is allowing gatherings of up to 50 people now. For sure things can change if there’s another wave but for now, seems like things are heading in the right direction. Fingers crossed!

Hello Vinod 😊 thanks for your reply! We think we will contact them in a little bit to see what the options are. I’m a bit more optimistic today because now QC will be allowing gatherings of up to 50 people. For sure that can change if there’s another wave, but for now I’m taking it as a sign of hope!

Yes! We booked the venue, photographer, videographer & DJ early and got 2020 pricing. Income has only been affected slightly but our living expenses have also gone down as things have changed recently so it balances out.

Yes! We’re looking into Azazie! My MOH is 3 hours and 1 BM is 8 hours away so we’ve been looking at that site since it will be difficult to get everyone together to go to a store, especially now & most have restrictions on how many people can go for 1 appointment anyways.

It never hurts to ask your vendors for their policies on postponing! But there’s been positive trends lately, and some articles have stated that a vaccine may even be ready for October 2020 Smiley smile

Hi Sarah, its so tough to make these decisions right now, January is so far away and a lot can happen! We made the difficult decision to postpone our fall wedding this year, because we don't feel it would be responsible to play it by ear until September to find out if a second wave is going to happen because our date was close to when it would be starting (in theory). But January is even farther away and maybe there will be a vaccine by then... who knows!

Whichever route you go, I wish you the best of luck and success!

I am so sorry to hear that! We are also facing such a difficult decision. We are now hoping to get married in a small setting and close this chapter, but now our venue is not only not refunding us our deposit, BUT they want us to pay our 40k minimum spend for an event that is not taking place. This is a terrible situation, but there is some hope ...

I don't know where else to turn. If anyone has any advice feel free to PM me or share your thoughts.

Hey! I would definitely keep planning if I were you. It’s better to have everything prepared and ready to go if the wedding will go ahead as planned than to run around last minute. Plus I agree with others on here about better pricing if you book this year, just be careful with the cancellation policy (though most vendors are being very flexible). I hope things will be back to “normal” in time for your wedding. Good luck!

Contact your venue to see what the situation is for January and base it on what is happening of uncertainty. Postpone if needed on the safe side feeling secured about travel plans for your guests too to come. Contact your vendor team as well to notify you have changed your date to accommodate the date change. Everything seems good and clear, keep the date and continue onwards as you will be able to get back on track by making appointments as soon as possible.

Another thing to consider, if you try and get vendors now instead of later, you may get 2020/2021 pricing instead of potentially 2022 pricing that's higher. But only do that if your personal funds allow it. Saving a few hundred bucks won't be worth it if your money meant for living expenses is tied up for an event potentially two years away.

Try azazie for the bridesmaid. It's online, they are amazing, the prices are unbeatable. I ordered swatches. I have 4 BM and one being out of town, it's so easy to get them all in a virtual room. Plus you can order some dresses to try it on.

That's the spirit 🙂 it's never too early. Better safe than sorry. Mostly with all the postponed dates, if a vendor cannot be flexible, he/she's not someone you want to deal with imho. Winters wedding are magical! Winter wonderland.

Hi Veronica😊 thanks for your reply! I think I will keep planning and inquire about their postponement policies. I feel like things are looking up as well, but I’m just worried about a 2nd wave hitting at that time and the same restrictions being put into place again. Planning is definitely something positive for me to look forward to so I think I will continue and just pay closer attention to the policies!

Hi Amelia 😊 thanks for your reply! I think I will keep planning and definitely inquire about postponement/cancellation clauses more than before. Stores seem to be starting to open but I know it’s a limited number of people that can go. I only have 3 BM but even if we can’t go all together, I guess that’s alright. I didn’t even think of things possibly closing again if there’s a 2nd wave 🤦🏻‍♀️ so now I’m definitely going to check with my girls!

Hi Baria 😊 thanks for your reply! I guess even if it seems early, it doesn’t hurt to inquire what our options would be, even if we can’t make the decision yet. I think as I continue to inquire with new vendors, I’ll also ask what their conditions are if we have to postpone due to COVID-19. We’d be looking at January 2022 if we postpone. I definitely still want a winter wedding.

Hello Sarah 😊 thanks for your input. I’m happy you got the back up date you wanted! You’re right, the sooner the better! We were “early” in booking everything initially lol so I don’t know why I’m so hesitant to inquire early. It doesn’t hurt to ask and know what our options are, even if we can’t make a decision yet! If we do postpone we’d be aiming for January 2022.

Hi Kelsie 😊 thanks so much for your input. Wow tbh I totally never even thought of things like the wait staff having masks and just how different it could feel depending on the rules at that time. If we postpone, it will likely be a year later, January 2022. I feel bad for reaching out so early since a lot can change but I guess it doesn’t hurt to know the options, even if we can’t make a decision yet.
I hope everything goes well for you in September! 💗

I would definitely keep planning and just be aware of the cancellation or postponement policies for the vendors.

There are alot of things that will stay the same even if you do have to postpone - so I would keep plugging away at those things as you go!

I just personally feel like things are looking up and moving in the right direction - just the hopeful side of me. Or rather, I just can't imagine still being in the same position 7 months from now, but no one knows I suppose? On the more realistic side, I just think life has to go on - and maybe there will be a second wave, but in that narrative then there will be third wave and a fourth wave - so we just carry on and adapt as we can!

I would keep planning, and ask each vendor (especially new ones) what their postponement or cancellation policy is.

If stores are open I would do bridesmaids dresses now just in case the second wave forces things to close again. It also gives you time to order them, have them made and shipped, and do alterations with time for delays or anything unexpected. Unless you dramatically change your plans you'll likely still have bridesmaids. I would also check with your BMs to make sure that they can still afford a dress right now as covid has added financial stress to a lot of people.

Talk to your vendors and see what they say. I'd say start with the venue. But if you can, continue planning. Everything you have will stay for anotjer date if needed. I see only touchy thing are cards, worst case scenario, they now have a change the date. I'm optimistic that by jan 2021 things will reopen. Depending on the number of people you have attending. But yes, summer weddings are very booked and trying tonget on at that time will be hard. But from winter to another winter/fall should be easier. Best if luck and don't loose the magic

I would email your vendors and ask about a back up date but continue planning as if the wedding were still a go.We got to our vendors early and every single one of them was able to book our back up date (same day but in 2021)A couple of weeks later I was hearing of brides losing deposits because the vendor was already booked on their next date choice. My point is even though the wedding seems far away there are a ton of 2020 brides that are postponing to 2021 and dates are being snapped up so the sooner you have a back up plan the easier everything becomes.

For the vendors you have already booked, ask about alternative options. They may say you have to wait, or they may soft hold a second date for you. It doesn't hurt to ask.

As for continuing to plan vs pausing, it depends on your financial situation. If covid caused any loss of work and income, you may not want to throw any additional cash towards a wedding as opposed to living expenses. If cash is not a problem but you want to secure a specific vendor, then keep going. I would suggest adding in postponement clauses in your contracts.

I would check with your venues and your vendors right away to see what possibly could be your options if you need to postpone. Or even check how long you have until you guys need to make a final decision. See what others dates are available just in case!

Dates are filling up fast because of the couples that have had to postpone this spring and summer weddings and couples that were already looking at getting married in 2021.
