Choosing your style

Shla, on February 10, 2019 at 20:58 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 19
How did you know what style of wedding you wanted? How did you decide on all the big and small details? Where did your vivid, beautiful vision of your day come from?

Everyone seems to have such beautiful, vivid visions of their perfect day and I'm super jealous of that! I've never been the girl who dreamed of my wedding day as a child. My fiance and I have NO vivid images of what we want so planning has been a nightmare so far. Haha.

Pinterest was definitely my friend but honestly we are having a very minimal wedding. We chose a beautiful venue and kind of just planned around that. I also never dreamed of my wedding and I am WAY too laid back when it comes to planning though.

The style was chosen from the start to keep it simple and elegant from the sight of the venue. the colours of white and black was easily shown and loved it from its set up on the tables.

The invitations also had gave that look to match the look and colour. The small details gave that the overlook view just the right touches from start to finish of the day.

The vision of a small wedding was clear as it wasn't going to too much to handle.

    Hey!

@Helene - Wedding soul sister over here. I initially wanted to get married at Banff Springs as well but logistic (and to be honest budget wise) it was not a for sure , then my fiance and I had brunch at Bow Valley and we immediately connected with it!! Such a gorgeous venue. Your vision sounds amazing!

I knew I wanted to get married on our anniversary in the fall, and it happened to fall on Thanksgiving weekend so we just kind of rolled with that and all the details for an elegant fall wedding came into play. I recalled going to a wedding as a kid that was all Fall colors and it always struck me as beautiful. I also happen to love all things pumpkin so that made some of it easy Smiley smile I think the venue can really help an idea for a style along!

I dreamed about my wedding my whole life, even went to school for event planning and took a wedding planning course... and I ended up with a totally different style/vision than anything I'd ever planned in my head...

Honestly, it may look like everyone's got this big plan they have cooked up from start to finish, and then execute it, but I think most of us change our plans, minds and styles as we go, as we find things. I know I kind of picked/molded/styled as I went, and just tried to be mindful of how things were going to come together later.

Having a base colour palette and a general 'vibe' (mine was "West Coast") kept me on track when picking any flowers, decor, clothing, centrepieces, etc.

Don't stress because you're not drowning yourself in wedding magazines and TLC show recordings! Your wedding will come together, and it will be a reflection of you and your FH, which is the most important part. It's not about what everyone else does, it's all about you! Smiley smile

Hello! I am the same as you, I didn't have a dream wedding day growing up and admittedly, until early last year. LOL. However, my fiance's godmother has this very beautiful cottage where we go to every summer if we both want a break from the city and that inspired both of us. We said that if we ever get married, that would be the PERFECT place!

Our wedding will be on July 2019 and it's going to be a lake side, bbq wedding where everyone (I hope) will really be comfortable and just have fun!

Anyways, whatever wedding you both decided you're going to have, it'll still be a dream wedding because you're marrying the one you love Smiley smile

Wow! I love the stained glass above the door! My venue has stained glass as well, which was a big selling feature for me.

    I am going with vintage.

I’ve gone back and forth on this many times! We starting wanting to elope, then we were gonna do a destination wedding, then we ended on a beautiful location only an hour away, giving us the feel of a destination wedding but still close enough for important guests who can’t travel will be able to attend.

The hotel I chose as my venue was build in the late 1800s so the owners decorated it beautifully with the Great Gatsby-style. Which is one of my favorite books on earth! I’m so in love, my pearls will be beautiful against the back drop of this place!!

At first, we were thinking of having the wedding at an Irish castle/manor so that my FH's family would not need to travel. I've always romanticized castles. But in the end, I wanted more personalization and control over the planning details, and it seemed too stressful to plan an Irish wedding from Canada.

Once we decided to plan locally, the venue really guided the theme. I'm really picky about things matching and looking "right", so I looked to the style and colours of the room. If you're undecided, I suggest looking at a few different styles of venue (modern, rustic, industrial, garden, old-world, etc.) to see which one speaks to you. From there, the little details will seem a lot easier. For example, if you are getting married in a rustic barn, burlap and mason jars would be a natural choice.

However, whatever you do end up choosing, it won't matter because it will be meaningful to you.

I kind of knew some elements I wanted and had pinterest boards of different ideas. I know I wanted something unique, that hasn't been done a million times before, so my vision is kind of a combination of different inspiration photos.

For me, there's always something in inspiration pics where I'm like: I can do without that. There seems to be one element that I don't like so I cut it from my "vision".

Some days it's harder to visualize, I'm a very visual learner and I have to see things as they are in order to appreciate it. My venue has photos of what others did, but it's not in my colour scheme/style and I find it hard to Photoshop in my mind what I want.

We knew what we didn't want (burlap, lace, mason jars...or anything rustic). We wanted it to feel intimate and relaxed, but we just didn't know what it would look like.
Then we went to Hawaii and that just confirmed what we did want : tropical/summer-feel with big green leaves and a few flowers.

This is a good question, I'm loving everyone's answers. We just knew we didn't want rustic, but we also didn't want anything too glam. And my FH helped me out majorly by nixing any pink in the color scheme lol. It was a very organic process, and I'm really happy with how it's all coming together.

For us (well me to begin with), I have ALWAYS loved blue/purple orchids since I was really young and that was one that that was 100% for me to have in my bouquet and a part of the wedding! They are typically called "Galaxy Orchids" so we kind of played off that with the rich colours and themes and decided an "Under the Stars" theme was the way to go! Things kept fitting in which made it all come together perfectly! Also my favourite colour is a deep purple so it just worked so well!

I didn’t grow up knowing what I wanted as a child either. We spent a a lot of time in the around planning stages, looking through Pinterest, taking “what’s your wedding style?” quizzes, and scouring magazines for inspiration. There’s tons inspiration available on WW too! So check that out and get a sense for what you like and what you don’t like.

I had a massive Pinterest board with hundreds of pins before getting engaged, so there was kind of a start. But you have to look at the big picture, and then try to piece things together.
For us we like fall for the weather and colours. So we picked colours that would look good in natural settings. From there, we had to look at our venue and what rooms they had, the different looks, colours etc.
It all comes down to what you guys like!

We didn't have a particular vision of what we wanted, it was more of that we knew what we didn't want. I find that I'll just see something on Pinterest and think "oh, that would look nice at our wedding" and go with it. Don't overthink things. Your wedding will come together and look great.

We adjusted as we went. At first it was going to be a lakeside wedding in the mountains at Moraine Lake near Lake Louise, with the reception at the Banff Springs Hotel. But, with a number of our guests over the age of 80, we decided to switch gears.

That led us to looking for venues that had some character and could accommodate our small group and had an outdoor ceremony location with indoor backup. We finally settled on Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant, which set the tone for a vintage/historical tone. From there, I had a vision, I found a dress, and the décor is slowly coming together.

I had wanted the winter castle wedding, and had been planning that for years. That's the wedding I had a vision for. But, the vision for the vintage, Anne of Green Gables-esque wedding has built itself into what it is. And, I'm grateful I've been open and receptive to it becoming what it will be. Smiley smile

Other than me thinking about my wedding since I was 5 - we are just basically putting things we like into a party and calling it a wedding! lol

We like camping and bonfires - so naturally we are having BBQ to eat and bonfires in the evening! My favourite colour is purple and his is blue - so our colours are plum and teal!

It's not so much a vision as it is us piecing things we like together with glue Smiley tongue
