Changing wedding colours for postponed reception?

Joanna, on January 29, 2021 at 13:31 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 18

Hello Brides!

I wanted to hear your thoughts or see what you are doing if you are postponing your wedding reception.

We will be getting married in May (our original date) and likely postponing our reception until December. Our wedding colours are lavender, sage and silver, which fits in beautifully for the spring, but unsure about the winter.

I think the sage and silver will be beautiful in the winter. I think we can change floral arrangements from lavender to white. My bridesmaids are in lavender and the groomsmen have the same colour tie...but there's no way they getting new outfits for one night. I don't even know if we will ask our wedding party to get redressed. The guys are renting tuxes and not sure if we have it in our budget to pay cover that.

Am I overthinking it?! What are you doing?

    That sounds lovely!
I do think red is the obvious choice for winter because of the holidays.

The colour change for the winter reception is a nice change due to the season. I know you decided white based on season. I thought the aqua/turquoise colour may replace the purple even though in the closer area of the blues\greens. It would be a nice addition to the arrangement.

The real question should be: do you love lavender and sage and silver? If yes then screw what colors are "in season" and enjoy a beautiful day together!

And I also think they'll be pretty together, and a little unexpected in the best way.

I'm a pretty fair-skinned and a 2pm sun would just be so bright that I would actually look silly in a suit as black as a tux. The original idea during winter was that even with daylight, it would probably be overcast. We'll make it work. I'm just concerned about my skin's contrast to the black suit in photos with the harsh light.

I was going to do red/silver/pinks and black for my winter wedding but we've changed to purples, silver, ivory and black. I am dying my flowers myself and just could not make a red that I liked. I had much more luck going with purple. I have light and dark purples (possibly some pinks) that I'm working with. I like the purple for winter now mostly because it isn't the reds that you usually see.

I’m fairly certain they are tuxes, but nothing has been finalized because the lockdown paused their shopping! They look like suits to me... lol
We were thinking lavender ties to match the dresses and something different for pocket square. I never thought to match the flowers so thank you for that!

Well as Carmel said, it’s you day and do whatever you want!! I wouldn’t judge you for wearing a tux at 2pm...but I probably wouldn’t know the difference anyhow! 😂

That is absolutely correct. What a time to be getting married! All of the rules get thrown out of the window... we’ve been through enough stress.
I love NYE in March! I hope your day is magical and everything you hoped it to be! ❤️

I think you should do whatever plays out the vision for your wedding. We are not in normal times and it's important to stick to your vision - who cares if the colours work for whatever season - if you love it, do it! If it helps... We had to move our NYE wedding 10 days out... Our change the date email/invite said "New Year's in March" and it will be NYE whenever it happens because this is what we dreamed of! I do like the idea someone else had about incorporating some deeper hues if you can but regardless, go with your vision. It'll be beautiful no matter what 😍

Are your groomsmen renting tuxedos or suits? If it's tuxedos, it should come with a black bow tie but you can add colours via the pocket square and the boutonniere. If they're renting suits, they can go with a really dark navy or charcoal for the winter and wear whatever colour long tie to match your bridesmaids. I suggest the lavender long tie to match their dress and a pocket square to match their flowers.

We went with black tie and full length silver gowns for our original winter wedding, when the sun was supposed to set at around 4:30pm (black tie is supposed to be evening wear and it's considered faux pas during the day). Now the wedding will be held in late summer/early fall when the sun is super bright and won't go down until after 8pm lol. If we end up not having the reception this year due to covid, I'm going to feel really silly wearing a tuxedo under the sun at 2pm Smiley xd

Because we purchased all our clothes, we're not switching and I don't want the guys to spend more money. If we didn't already buy or are renting, we'd absolutely switch.

I personally like those wine / burgundy colours in the fall paired with some burnt orange. I’ve always considered purple and lilac a winter wedding colour!Changing wedding colours for postponed reception? 1

I always associate reds/wine colours and navy with winter. I like the idea to add some dark hues too! Thank you!

I think your original colours would be lovely in the winter. Throw in a couple dark hues and bam.

I think if you added in some deeper purple you could totally pull it together for a winter reception!

I think those colours would all work really well in the winter. But even if you do decide to change the flowers to white (like if certain things are not in season and you change for cost reasons) I don't think it will matter that the bridesmaids/groomsmen are wearing lavender because all of your colours will go really well with it.
