Changing Last Names (slavic husband -ova)

Denise, on July 10, 2019 at 15:01 Posted in Before the wedding 0 10

Hi, does anyone know if a bride can use the husband's last name but with an -ova at the end? My fiance is Slovak and in Slavic countries, women in the family add -ova to the last name to make it feminine. For example, last name Novak would be Novakova for women in the family.

Does the government of Canada or the province of Ontario allow us to follow this European custom even if the wedding takes place in Canada? If so, how and in which document should I put Novakova as my married name? I am worried that if I do not indicate this, I would be Novak.

Thanks,
Denise

I talked to my fiance last night and he said it will make him happy if I get the -ova. It's a bit complicated to do a legal name change but I might do it as it means a lot to him.

Having same issue! Had someone get married last year and she had to do a full legal name change to get the -a at the end. But this was in BC. I still havent decided if I want to change my last name because of this, as it just seems too complicated

Unfortunately, I think this would mean a legal name change with your birth certificate, too - I'd suggest contacting with someone at the province of Ontario to see if changing it to Novak first (through assuming his name) and then adding the "ova" at the end wold be different? Good luck, and keep us posted!

Would there be any way of making a trip out to Slovakia and changing it there? It may mean a quick elopement but it would be at least one way of doing it

Hi Tori, I believe it's the same in Ontario. I don't want to change my birth records though...

My FH is currently having his last named changed (to his Dad's last name instead of his Mom's) and it will change his birth certificate.

Not sure if it's the same as in Ontario - but in MB I believe it would have to be changed.

Keep in mind - we are not the government of Ontario so they have the final say and we are just taking educated guesses.

Hi Lisa, should I assume the last name Novak frist and then change into Novakova? Legally changing a name would also change my birth certificate so I am trying not to make name change an option (would rather assume than change)

    Hi Denise,

It's my understanding that you can do this, but it would mean a legal change of name, rather than a "typical" assuming of your husband's last name. I recommend looking at the Province of Ontario's website on legal change of name - that should provide you with everything you need to do this.
