Daniella
Newbie April 2020 Hawaii

Cancelled for covid

Daniella, on March 27, 2020 at 15:16 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 10

I'm looking for a new spot for my fiance and I to get married. We were originally eloping to Hawaii, seven days from now, but obviously that's not happening. We are now looking for a spot in Canada to try again mid August. Any ideas? Most of the elopement packages I'm finding are insanely expensive.

We have you covered, Daniella! We have a guide on Where to Elope in Canada to help you get started. Do you know what province you'd like to get married in, or the type of venue (beach, mountains etc)?

We were thinking we would try again in August. All registries in the province are closed so we can’t even get a marriage license right now.

We are in Edmonton so that’s totally an option on our list. I’ve been having a really hard time getting their website to cooperate to get proper pricing but it’s certainly one I’m considering for if travel bans aren’t lifted by the summer.

Where are you located? The Fairmont Jasper Park lodge in Alberta has some very good prices for an elopement.

It really depends on how far you want to travel and how many people you need to get legally married where you go.

I imagine with Hawaii you were having a beach wedding so you could look at beachfront Air B&Bs, resorts, or cottages near lakes or on either coast. I'll shamelessly plug New Brunswick and say that St Andrews would be gorgeous in August, so would Shediac.
Depending on what province you get married in you might need a different number of witnesses, and if you don't use an elopement company you might need to see if your officiant can provide someone to sign with you or bring a few friends or family. Most of the provincial websites have a getting married section that lays out the legal steps for you.

The hope of getting married at this time is hard enough for couples considering the consequences of getting fined. Venues, public areas and Officiants don't want to take a chance going out of their way until everything is clear. I do understand eloping is the best way right now to get married though the circumstances are highly risky. Best to wait and check with your city hall to book the date and get the marriage certificate at the same time.

You better check your local jurisdiction about parks. All parks in Toronto are now shut and any gatherings on city parks are banned because people haven't been practicing proper social distancing.

I would say to for sure stick to whatever province/territory you are located in for starters. My DH was working in AB and when he came back to MB he was put on the 14-day quarantine (and since we live together, so was I).

I think at this point, if you’re wanting to elope like this month, the only truly responsible thing to do is to have an officiant meet you somewhere outdoors like a park, beach or forest and have two witnesses there maintaining physical distance. That’s what I’m considering- our original date is actually set for October but I just don’t think it’s going to unfold the way we imagined with the number of people who will need to travel to be there.
