Cancellation rant

Megan, on March 28, 2020 at 12:24 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 9
So I’ve already said this before but due to Covid-19 we’re most likely postponing our wedding but we have to wait for our flights to be officially cancelled. We are due to get married on our destination wedding in Mexico on May 15th. So far the flights haven’t been cancelled but I just don’t see how they won’t be at this point. My planner/travel agent seems to be hopeful that we’re still going to go in May which at this point is very unrealistic.

So here’s the kicker... I have been asking her about postponing or even cancelling for about 2 weeks now. If us and our guests cancelled right now, we would lose 50% of our money (unless we have insurance). Obviously I don’t want that to happen and neither do my guests, BUT if we postponed to a different date, we would have to pay more because the flight prices have gone up... I was so mad when she told me this because I would’ve thought they would let us keep our original price! We’re trying to work with her right now because everyone would rather spend a couple $100 more dollars than lose 50% of what they’ve already spent but it’s so frustrating. This whole thing just makes me want to cancel and forget about it all but I don’t want us or our guests to lose out on our money. We’re currently looking into going in late October now since it would only be another $160 more but like I said before, we have to wait until our flights officially cancel before we can rebook which means the price might still go up...
This whole thing has left a bitter taste in my mouth and I just don’t know what to do anymore.

I'm sorry to hear this - but if it helps explain it any better, the job of the planner/travel agent would be to find you the best deals, they wouldn't be able to stick to the same price or else they would be out the difference.

When me and my DH were looking into having a travel agent the best price for flights was the same that we could find through West Jet - they only do the research part really (at least in our case that's all they were there for). So we just booked with West Jet to cut out the middle man. For our family that use travel agents it's because they either book more last minute and/or are busy people (college prof.'s, nurses, emt's, etc.) who find it easier to leave the online research to others.

    Hi Megan,

I'm really sorry that it's looking like you will have to postpone your wedding. These are really difficult times and I can only imagine how hard it would be to have to postpone your wedding and then have to deal with all of this nonsense on top of it.

As hard as it is, I would say wait until you know for sure about May. I agree that it seems very unlikely that much will have changed by then, but let the airline cancel your flights so you can receive the credit.

I went to school a 5 hour flight from home and was in a long distance relationship, so I did a LOT of flying. I can tell you from experience that the cost of flights fluctuates a little bit 4 months or more before (until late June) but overall they wont really change that much. After that, they will probably being to steadily climb until early October and then really take off in cost after that. Granted, who knows what's going to happen because of this pandemic, but I would say to wait until the airline cancels on you and then re-book before prices shoot up due to social distancing measures being removed etc.

Also, it's worth keeping in mind that when you look back on your memory of this time this whole situation will be an anecdotal headache compared to your wedding day. I can really empathize with you, and I know you must be feeling terribly right now, but you're still going to get married and I think that that memory will overshadow everything else that's happening right now.

I hope you're able to resolve things soon, and I think that I can speak for everyone on this site when I say that we're all here for you. Smiley heart

We’re with air transat and it’s the same kind of deal, no cash back but they will give you a credit to use within 24 months. But right now it doesn’t look like we’re allowed to do anything until our flights get grounded... I’m not sure they’d offer a credit before our flights get cancelled. Hope your stress has lifted at least a little bit!

The cancellation rant is true and the loss does come upon the time occurring. Travel agencies are trying to make trips postponed for your guests and yourselves to accommodate your wedding day for a later time. The loss isn't something you want to lose and pay more later on given the price going up as mentioned. You made the right decision to stick to push the date and keep your guests on track too. This crisis is making everyone crazy in their way to pay more during this time. Price increasing for essential items are getting ridiculous as what your going through. Don't feel discouraged about this, just secured to feel better about working out the travel date.

We cancelled before flights were grounded and ended up getting a full refund from the resort for the wedding. Sunwing's policies keep changing but ultimately our guests are going to get a travel voucher valid for 24 months. It isn't ideal, but that could at least give you some peace of mind for your guests travelling to your wedding at a later date. And for those that can't make it, they would have the ability to travel on their own time. We are still fighting for cash refunds for our group, but it doesn't look likely. I'm sorry you're having to make these difficult decisions at all!

That's really frustrating. Like you I supremely doubt life will be back to normal in May, and I imagine international travel will take longer to be allowed even after we are allowed to return to work and go shopping.

I totally get your desire to cancel, and not wanting to lose the cash you and your guests have spent. I mentioned to my fiance that if we need to postpone we will just elope and he and I are really really ok with that. If you postpone and still decide to cancel do you lose any more money? If not I would postpone and then see how you feel closer to the newer date when some of this stress is gone.
